Exclusive Dreamy Valentine’s Day Session with Amanda and Kevin

Amanda and Kevin were the perfect couple to bring my handmade Valentine backdrop to life. Their session is soft, romantic and a little dreamy, showing how a simple themed set plus relaxed direction becomes genuinely tender couple portraits.

So, by now you have probably heard about the journey building my Valentine’s Day session backdrop was. During the process it felt like the universe colluded against me, but in the end, it was a gorgeous set perfect to capture the essence of your love. In fact, because it was not quite perfect, it is more representative of your love. Love is neither perfect nor uncomplicated. I am really excited for all of the potential it has to be used in the future!

This year the heart was available for two exclusive Valentine’s Day sessions only. This week I wanted to share some of my favorites from Amanda and Kevin’s session!
From the minute I read Amanda’s inquiry form, I knew her relationship would be a blast to photograph. They did not disappoint. Kevin and Amanda were one of the most amusing couples I have had the pleasure of working with. Amanda and Kevin have been together for three years and their first date is one of the most memorable I’ve ever heard about. They talked for 14 hours and then proceeded to hangout the next day, after taking a quick nap. So, if you are looking for a metric to see if your partner is the one, here’s a new standard. After meeting them, I can see how perfect they are for each other. They continuously riffed of one another, and I don’t know about them, but I certainly did not stop laughing.

So, one of my favorite ways to start a couples’ session is by playing a card game. This game has extremely bizarre prompts on it (i.e. blow on your partner and say I’m giving you a blowjob) but is amazing for getting you out of your head and laughing in front of the camera. Most couples are a little hesitant at first but not Amanda and Kevin. About seven cards in, Kevin got the prompt to do parkour off the environment surrounding the Valentine’s Day Park picnic setup and he went all out. The man was jumping off the trees and even leapt across the blanket, which did not end ideally. The grass was a tad wet, so he slipped and fell onto his butt. But Kevin took this in stride, leaving me and Amanda laughing really hard. And there is photographic evidence of this magnificent leap.

I love working with couples who are willing to try any prompt or pose I throw at them. Two of my favorite things are having couples play tag around a tree or fixture nearby and if we are in an outdoor space like a park, have them roll down the hill or plane. Amanda and Kevin, yet again gave it their all. I don’t think I have seen an adult roll as quickly as Kevin before and he even jumped onto a tree while they were playing tag.

The set I created was beautiful to tie their love together. They threw roses at each other, pretended to smell them, kissed behind them, and held the chocolate box together. And the body pillows made the perfect cuddle spot, where they could snuggle up close to each other.

So, enjoy some of my favorites!

  • How to be Your Own Valentine This Year

How to be Your Own Valentine This Year

You do not need a partner to celebrate Valentineu2019s Day. Being your own Valentine simply means treating yourself with the same care you would give someone you love, whether that is a favorite meal, a small gift, a solo adventure or a restful day; here are my favorite ways to do it.

While Valentine’s Day is commonly thought of as reserved solely for romantic partners, it does not have to be and is honestly the perfect opportunity to affirm yourself and appreciate your personal growth. So, this year, join me and do something a little different. So, this is my guide to “How to be Your Own Valentine!” If you were searching for an occasion to indulge yourself this, is it!

So, here are eight contenders. If you have other ideas, drop them in the comments!

    1. Plan a Solo Adventure for Valentine’s Day

Each and every one of us has at least one dream trip or adventure we want to go on. This could be a day trip down to Santa Barbara or simply a hike you’ve been dying to go on. So, this Valentine’s Day plan to go on that solo adventure. Some other ideas are exploring a new museum, going zip-lining, a pottery class, a jewelry class, going rock-climbing, go to a new national park, take the time to read that book that’s been sitting on your bookshelf.

These activities will give you a chance to explore a new side of yourself and take time for yourself.

    2. Host your Own Valentine’s Movie Marathon

Who says you need a romantic partner to have a movie marathon. You can have your own or you could invite some of your best friends over and plan a movie night with some of each person’s favorites.  So, what goes into a Valentine’s Day themed movie night? I am glad you asked. If it was me, I would choose films that celebrate love, women empowerment, and self-discovery. Then I would make some buttery popcorn, get out my favorite chocolates and sweets, get into my coziest pajamas, and watch movies all night long. Heck, the best part of this movie marathon, is that it DOES NOT matter what movies anyone else likes, just you!

    3. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day or Have an At Home Spa Day

You could either go into a spa or do this one at home. If you go into a spa salon indulge in every treatment that sounds interesting or you’ve been wanting to try (or what your budget permits). You could get a massage, a facial, and a manicure or pedicure. Or maybe there is a specific scrub you want to try. Or if you are doing this at home, get a face mask or two, a bath bomb, and your favorite wine. Then prepare a bath, get your face mask on, and read your book or watch your favorite movie in the bath with a glass of wine in hand.

    4. Cook Yourself a Valentine’s Day Meal

If you are busy like me, you do not often have the time to cook a proper, delicious meal. So, this Valentine’s Day set out the time to plan a delicious (healthy) meal. If you like experimenting, you could find some new recipes or come up with your own recipe. Then set out some candles and get yourself flowers for your dining room table. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy. Or if cooking is not your thing, you could pick up your favorite take-out food, set the table with flowers and candles and tuck into your take-out. If you need to relax and slow-down, then put on some comfy clothes and enjoy. The most important part of being your own valentine is listening to what your body and mind need!

    5. Practice Creative Self-Expression

Now, don’t tell me that you are not creative, because every single person is, just in different ways. Say you’re an analytical scientist, you are still creative. You are utilizing the data you’re collecting and coming up with creative solutions. So, this Valentine’s Day, create something. You could paint, write, do something crafty like crocheting or felting, play music and dance your heart out. Get rid of any self-imposed expectations and do the first thing that comes to mind.

    6. Take Yourself Shopping this Valentine’s Day

This one falls into the indulge yourself category, but this Valentine’s Day treat yourself to a shopping adventure or buy yourself that one thing you’ve had your eye on but keep coming up with reasons not to buy. It could be a new outfit, workout gear, make-up, lingerie, or it could be getting yourself a pedicure (Lavender Nails here in Pasadena is amazing!). Regardless of what it is, treat yourself to something you love and brings you happiness!

    7. Plan a Hangout (In-person or Virtual) with Friends

If you don’t want to spend Valentine’s Day by yourself organize a virtual or in-person hangout with your closest friends. You could have a game night (Code Names is a super fun game to play online), you could have a movie watch party, or simply facetime and talk about all the new happenings in each of your lives. This way you are spending Valentine’s Day with everyone you love and cherish!

    8. Journaling! Practice Gratitude and Self-Reflection

Time to get that journal out! This year take some time to reflect on your journey and how far you’ve come. You should be proud of yourself. So, here are some Valentine’s Day writing prompts: write yourself a love letter, jot down 15 affirmations, come up with 15 goals, come up with 15 accomplishments you are proud of (could be as simple as made myself dinner or went on a run or drew something cool), write down all of your strengths, or you could think about changes you want to make! We are all our biggest critics, so this Valentine’s Day it is time to take a moment for self-love.

    To Conclude

Hopefully, this gave you some ideas as to how to be your own valentine this year. Truly, you are an independent badass and deserve to take this time to do something just for you. Regardless of if you decide to go on a solo-adventure, have a DIY spa day, enjoy a cozy movie night, cook yourself a gourmet meal, start reading a new book, or spend the evening journaling, remember that you are the most important person in your life. So treat yourself kindly and be proud of how far you’ve come.

And if you are looking for something to give you a confidence boost, I would love to chat with you about Boudoir and how transformative it can be. Let’s eradicate that silly myth that you must be confident in order to do boudoir! You do not. It will build up that confidence regardless of where you are starting your journey 🙂

Valentineu2019s Day is celebrated in wonderfully different ways around the world, from anonymous pressed-flower cards in Denmark to women gifting chocolate in Japan and friendship-focused celebrations in Finland; here is a tour of the most charming traditions.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in unique ways across the world. So, this week I thought it would be cool to look at all of the different Valentine’s Day Traditions across the world!

    The United States

Here, In the United States, Valentine’s Day is synonymous with romantic gestures of all sizes, gifts, and outward expressions of love. Typically couples exchange chocolates, flowers, and heartfelt cards. Most restaurants and entertainment businesses offer special deals for romantic dinners and activities. Other businesses host special events, such as a Latte making class. School-aged children also spend het day exchanging valentines and candies with their classmates. Current celebrations are shifting towards more creative and homemade gift ideas, such as personalized items, experiences, and weekend getaways.

    Europe

    The United Kingdom

In the UK, Valentine’s Day is a dedicated time for those in relationships to express their affection and love through gestures such as cards, flowers, and romantic gestures. Similar to the U.S. lots of restaurants have Valentine’s Day menus that showcase yummy dishes and high-brow wines.

    France

In France, often thought of as the epicenter of romance, Valentine’s Day is a massive celebration. Those in relationships, exchange cartes d’amour (love letters) and often eat at a candlelit restaurant, whether it is a quaint bistro or a Michelin-starred restaurant. The city of Paris, aka the city of love, with its iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral, becomes even more magical on Valentine’s Day, drawing couples from all over the world.

    Germany

In Germany, Valentine’s Day is called Valentinswoche, which is a week-long celebration preceding Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Throughout this week, couples exchange small gifts symbolizing their love and appreciation for their partner. All of these gifts demonstrate their love through thoughtful gestures and acts of service, solidify couples’ love for each other.

    Italy

Italy is a country known for its romantic flair. Common Valentine’s activities include going on romantic gondola rides along the canal, enjoying gelato, and visiting iconic landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and the Ponte Vecchio. One of Italy’s most popular Valentine’s Day traditions involves “Baci Perugina,” a chocolate-covered hazelnut. This is kind of like a chocolate version of a fortune cookie. Inside the chocolate-covered hazelnuts is a love-letter/note. These little notes are typically romantic messages or quotes about love. If you ask me, these sound absolutely delicious, who doesn’t love chocolate covered hazelnuts??

    Wales

Wales has a unique Valentine’s Day tradition. In Wales couples exchange intricately carved wooden spoons, known as Lovespoons. These spoons are often carved with symbols such as hearts, keys and locks, which represent one’s love and commitment to each other. Historically, a young man would spend hours carving elaborate Lovespoons and offer it to his partner and hope they would accept it.

    Estonia

Estonia views Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love and friendship. Actually, it commonly refers to Valentine’s Day as Friend’s Day, encouraging everyone to show appreciation for their friends and loved ones. Personally, I am in complete agreement with Estonia, and agree that Valentine’s Day should emphasize the importance of all relationships not just romantic relationships.

    Asia

    Philippines

This is one of the coolest, most unique Valentine’s Day traditions around the world if you ask me. In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day is a popular day for couples to get married during mass wedding ceremonies. In these ceremonies, couples who might not be able to afford a traditional wedding are able to celebrate their love in a meaningful way. The mass weddings are often sponsored by the local government, non-profit organizations, or private institutions. This removes the financial barrier and allows everyone to celebrate their love together, bringing the community together.

    South Korea

South Korea has two holidays directly tied to Valentine’s Day. On their Valentine’s Day, women gift men chocolates. One month after is White Day on which men reciprocate the gesture and give their women gifts often including chocolates, flowers, or any other token of appreciation. Then, one month later on April 14th is Black Day. This is a holiday dedicated to single people, who gather and eat Jajangmyeon, which is a black bean paste noodle dish.

    Japan

In Japan, the main form of celebrating Valentine’s Day is women gifting chocolates to men. There are two different types of chocolate that get gifted. The first is for romantic partners or where romantic feelings are present, honmei-choco. The second is for friends, colleagues and family members giri-choco, which are chocolates gifted out of appreciation or politeness.

    China

The Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day is the Qixi Festival. This is celebrated on the seventh ay of the seventh lunar month, which is August 10, 2024. This festival is based upon the annual meeting of Zhinü and Niulang in Chinese mythology. To celebrate, couples often exchange gifts, go on elaborate romantic dates, and express their love for one another.

    India

Valentine’s Day is not typically celebrated in Indian culture, although amongst younger generations it is picking up popularity. Some couples embrace the holiday as a means to show their love and affection for their partner.

    Thailand

In Thailand, Valentine’s Day coincides with Makha Bucha, commemorating the day when 1250 monks spontaneously gathered to hear Buddha preach. This holiday is celebrated by releasing lanterns into the sky or floating candles down the river to symbolize love and good fortune.

    Latin America

    Brazil

In Brazil, Valentine’s Day is known as Dia dos Namorados, which translates to Lovers’ Day. This celebration does not take place on February 14th but rather on June 12th. For Día dos Namorados, couples spend the day together and exchange chocolates, flowers, and other meaningful gifts. Additionally, the houses and streets are decorated. This holiday is not just for those in relationships. In Brazil, if you are single there are many rituals you can perform, here are three:

    1. For more passion: you mix a glass of water and coffee powder and leave it untouched for three days and dispose of it on the fourth day.
    2. If you want to forget old love you place two sprigs of fennel in a glass with water and leave it alone for 3 days after which you empty it into your garden of a flowerpot.
    3. If you want to get rid of envious feelings towards those in relationships, you add coarse salt and brown sugar to a full water bottle and after the third day you empty the water in the shape of a cross in front of your house.

    Mexico

In Mexico, Valentine’s Day is known as El Día del Amor y la Amistad, which translates to The Day of Love and Friendship. Like Estonia, in Mexico, El Día del Amor y la Amistad is a celebration of both romantic and platonic love. People exchange gifts, flowers, and cards with loved ones, and restaurants have special offers and manus. In some communities, there are parades, concerts, and other public events to mark the occasion.

    Argentina

In Argentina, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as part of Semana de la Dulzura, which translates to sweetness week. During this week, which typically takes place in July, people exchange candies, chocolates, and other treats with their loved ones. This week is used to show your appreciation for friends, family and romantic partners.

    Colombia

Columbia celebrates El Día del Amor y la Amistad.  A day to celebrate your love and appreciation for all of you friends, family, and romantic partners. Columbian cities are adorned with heart-shaped decorations. Often there are other concerts, festivals, or events to celebrate El Día del Amor y Amistad.

    Peru

In Peru, Valentine’s Day is known as El Día del Amor, which directly translates to Day of Love. On this day, couples celebrate their love with romantic gestures of varying sizes, such as exchanging gifts and dining out. And cities are decorated with flowers and heart-shaped balloons, generating an overall excitement and enthusiasm for the El Día del Amor

    Africa

    South Africa

In South Africa, couples often spend Valentine’s Day going on romantic adventures, like going on a picnic or having dinner at a classy restaurant. Some people even go on hot balloon rides or on wine tasting tours in the Cape Winelands.

    Nigeria

In Nigeria, Valentine’s Day is celebrated through music, dance, and poetry. Lots of people gather at parties, concerts, and cultural events to show their love and appreciation through song, dance, and spoken performances.

    Ghana

In Ghana, Valentine’s Day is known as Red and White Day. On this day, people dress in red and white and exchange gifts and cards. Many schools and workplaces host special events and activities to celebrate Red and White day, creating a festive atmosphere surrounding the holiday.

    Kenya

In Kenya, the Maasai community celebrates their love on Valentine’s day through the exchange of traditional gifts, such as beaded jewelry and clothing with intricate patterns and symbols. Traditional ceremonies and rituals can take place on Valentine’s Day that bless newlywed couples and reaffirm love and commitment within the community.

    Egypt

In Egypt, Valentine’s Day is commonly celebrated with a romantic cruise along the Nile River. On the cruise, couples get to enjoy the spectacular views of ancient temples and monuments. As well as consume delicious food and watch live entertainment.

    To Conclude

There are so many different Valentine’s Day traditions around the world. While writing this blog post, I loved seeing the similarities in how Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the world, but also the differentiations. I personally, think that Valentine’s Day should be used to celebrate all forms of love, platonic and romantic, and so it was really cool seeing that South Korea has its own holiday specifically for friendships. And I thought that Wales’s tradition of Lovespoons was really cool and far more meaningful than buying cheap flowers and stuffed animals. And the Phillippines’s tradition of mass weddings is something I never knew about, but an brilliant idea that truly brings the community together.

The way we celebrate Valentine’s Day around the world will continue to evolve as the digital era continues, but it is super valuable to take a step back and appreciate who is around you in a meaningful way. And hey, the digital world means that now you are able to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your family, friends, and romantic partners even if you are not physically in the same state.

    33 Unique Valentine’s Day Ideas

If you want to celebrate Valentineu2019s Day differently this year, you have plenty of options, from cozy at-home date nights and creative DIY gifts to outdoor adventures and mini getaways; below are thirty-three unique ideas to make the day your own.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to your love and your love alone. So, celebrating valentine’s day with a unique idea makes it significantly more meaningful, allowing you to show your appreciation and dedication to your partner. It is easy to buy chocolates and flowers, fewer people spend time planning an activity that will form core memories and further deepen your connection. So, here are 32 unique Valentine’s Day ideas for you to execute, some are simple and some are more time intensive.

    1. Create a scavenger hunt: Your scavenger hunt can be based on a hobby of theirs, or their favorite movie, or meaningful locations to your relationship. Honestly, there are an infinite number of ways to make a scavenger hunt, but make sure it is tailored to your partner. If you are crafting it to be significant locations to your relationship you can include places like where you had your first date or first met or told each other “I love you.”
    2.  DIY wine or chocolate tasting at home: Rather than just getting a box full of chocolates and gifting them to your partner, you could get an assortment of wines and chocolates and set up an at-home tasting station. You can take turns sampling each chocolate and wine. Once you’ve tried each one you can make separate lists of your favorite flavors and pairings and compare.
    3.  Write love letters and read them aloud: what could be more romantic than reading a heartfelt love letter to your partner and vice versa. You can read them to each other over dinner or cozied up on the couch. You could even write them together at a park. But make sure you sit down and think about what you want to say to your partner and tell them all the reasons your life is better with them in it. And you walk away with a keepsake for moments where you might want reassurance but can’t be physically near your partner.
    4. Plan a surprise picnic: As a park enthusiast, a picnic is always going to be on my list. To make this extra romantic, you can pack a basket with your partner’s favorite snacks, drinks, and activities. You could bring mini canvases to paint together, or books if they’re an avid reader, or frisbee disks if they would enjoy that. I recommend choosing a picturesque scenic spot where you can relax and enjoy each other’s company.
    5. Couples cooking class: Cooking with other people can be stressful, but a cooking class is always a good time. Especially, since someone else is guiding you through the process, so you are almost guaranteed a delicious meal. You can branch out with a cooking class and learn to cook a new recipe or learn new culinary techniques.
    6. Latte Art Class: If this is not a unique valentine’s day idea, I don’t know what is. But I don’t know if you have ever tried making coffee well foam art, but it is challenging as f***. So, why not try something new this Valentine’s Day. And hey, some of the most fun adventures are doing things that you suck at, as long as you can laugh at yourself. If you are located near Redondo Beach, Klatch Coffee is hosting a latte art class.
    7. Movie marathon: If your partner loves movies like I do, selecting a lineup of some of their favorite movies or romantic movies to watch together is a wonderful way to spend your valentine’s day. With a line-up in hand, you can make it even cozier with blankets, pillows, and delicious snacks.
    8. Couples massage or spa day: Given that Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, this idea will work better on the weekend preceding Valentine’s Day or the weekend after. You can treat yourselves to a day of relaxation and pampering at the spa. You could do couples massages, or facials, hot tub soaks, or anything else your local spa offers.
    9. Memory jar: As a super sentimental person, this one is a winner in my eyes. You could start a tradition of creating a memory jar. This jar will be filled with notes containing your favorite shared moments, inside jokes, and really any special memories you want to preserve. This tradition can continue on throughout the year and a near jar could be started each Valentine’s Day.
    10. Sunset hike and stargazing: If you and your partner enjoy hiking or stargazing, you could go on a scenic hike to a lookout or mountaintop and watch the sunset. I would personally bring along a blanket, so you have somewhere to lie down and watch the starry sky! If you both are not big on hiking, then you could a drivable viewpoint in Los Angeles and bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy while you watch the sunset and magical night.
    11. Homemade chocolates or treats: If you enjoy cooking together, you could find a recipe for homemade chocolates, truffles, or another one of your favorite sweets. You could try different flavor combinations or have fun making traditional delicious chocolates together
    12. Virtual date night: this one is for my long-distance couples. If for whatever reason you are unable to spend Valentine’s Day together in-person, you can plan a virtual date night on facetime or Zoom. Now, instead of simply calling you can play games together, watch a movie simultaneously, cook the same recipe together, or draw or paint together.
    13. Love song or poem: If you love putting your thoughts into writing, you could write and perform a love song or poem for your partner. This is a super creative, unique way to express your feelings of gratitude and love to your partner. If you are trying to up the romantic, you can set up some candles or sit by a fireplace (if you have one).
    14. Scenic drive: If you love driving, you could take a leisurely drive together and enjoy the beautiful views and the journey. You can stop along the way to explore cute towns you pass through or stunning landscapes. A scenic drive will allow you to enjoy each others company.
    15. Themed dinner night: If you are really into trying new cuisines or learning about different cultures, you could have a themed dinner. You can research traditional dishes and decorations and go on an adventure together. If you aren’t interested in trying different cuisines, you could theme your dinner with your favorite movie, for example: a Gilmore Girls themed dinner.
    16. Vision board: If you like creating goals and envisioning the future, you can set aside time to create a vision board together. It could be filled with images and words that represent your dreams, goals, and desires as a couple.
    17. Surprise weekend getaway: If your partner loves exploring new places, this could be the perfect unique valentine’s day activity for you. You could plan a spontaneous getaway to somewhere nearby for a weekend. Sweep your partner off their feet. Depending on what you both like to do you could choose a cozy bed and breakfast or a luxury hotel or a charming mountain cottage oasis. A surprise weekend getaway will let you escape your everyday routines and enjoy each other’s company.
    18. Dance class: If you both like dancing or being active this one is for you. You could take a dance class together. This could be an upbeat class where you are learning new moves or just messing around, or it could be a ballroom dance class where you are sharing intimate moments. Regardless of if you take a Zumba class, go to a salsa, tango, or ballroom dance class, it will bring you closer together and make a happy memory.
    19. Indoor fort: Who said indoor forts are just for children? Definitely not me. You can build a cozy fort in your living room with blankets, pillows, and furniture. Inside your fort, you can cuddle each other, play games, eat your favorite snacks, or enjoy a movie night.
    20. Volunteer together: If you both enjoy giving back to the community this is the perfect unique valentine’s day idea. You can volunteer at a local charity or organization. This could be serving meals at a soup kitchen, helping with a beach cleanup, or helping at an animal shelter. You can show how much attention you pay to your partner, by what charitable activity you plan!
    21. Photoshoot: As a photographer, of course this is on my list. But seriously, hiring a professional photographer to capture your relationship. In the heart of a single frame lies a tale that transcends the bounds of time – a story that unfolds with the click of a shutter. Each moment preserved by the photographer will become a treasured relic that you can look back on whenever you want. Checkout my Valentine’s Special here!
    22. Rooftop dinner: If you like trying new restaurants and cityscape views, you can organize a romantic rooftop dinner. The other way to do this is on your own rooftop if you have access. If you want to up the romance, you can set up candles, string lights, and soft music and enjoy a delicious meal.
    23. Playlist of songs: Aka make a modern mixtape. Your mixtape can be composed of songs that hold significant meaning to your relationship or songs that remind you or your partner. You can listen to the playlist together and reminisce about each memory associated with each song.
    24. Write a love story together: A little bit like Mad Libs, you can write a love story together that reflects your relationship. Or you can predesign your own Mad Lib and write out your love story emitting random nouns, Proper nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Then on Valentine’s Day you can have your partner fill in the missing words and laugh at the story it tells. If you write a proper love story together, you can incorporate your senses of humor and adventure and the ways you care for each other. You can alternate choosing plot twists and motifs to include. A perfect unique Valentine’s Day idea that is completely personalized and irreproducible. If you were going all out, you could even get it printed and turn it into a booklet.
    25. Virtual double date: If you are like me and most of your besties live in different states, you can arrange for a virtual double date with them. This way you get to spend time with more than just one loved one. On your virtual double date you can play games, share stories, or simply enjoy each other’s company. If you are looking for a fun group game, I recommend Code names.
    26. Art museum or gallery: If you guys love art or art history, you could visit a museum or gallery and explore each exhibit hand in hand. Afterwards, you can discuss your favorite pieces, interpretations, and artistic styles you saw.
    27. Recreate a memorable moment: a little roleplaying never hurt anybody. You can recreate a special moment in your relationship, like your first date, proposal, or favorite anniversary or celebration. This will demonstrate to your partner that you are always paying attention to them and could be a super fun activity!
    28. Themed costume night: I already mentioned this one earlier with themed dinners, but for a themed costume night you can dress up like your favorite fictional couples or characters from movies, books, or TV shows. You can go all out with your outfits and accessories and spend the rest of the evening embodying their personalities.
    29. Pottery or painting class: If you are artsy or interested in trying new things, you could take a pottery or painting class together. Regardless of if you are any good, you will form funny memories and get to explore your creativity. Who knows, maybe you will learn a new skill. If you are already into art, you can learn a new technique, experiment with a new medium, and create unique works of art to remember this Valentine’s Day with.
    30. Adventure activities: If you are both super adventurous, you can plan an intensive day of thrilling activities like zip-lining, kayaking, rock-climbing, white-water rafting, snow-shoeing, the options are needless. But what better way to spend Valentine’s Day than conquering new challenges, and creating unforgettable memories of these shared adventures.
    31. Candlelit dinner at home: This one is a classic, but still worthy of being included in this list. So, what else screams “I love you and Happy Valentine’s Day” than preparing a candlelit dinner for just you two. You could cook one of their favorite dishes or something they want to try. You can set up a table with flowers in the center and candles surrounding it. Then turn off your phones, take off your Apple Watches or Garmin’s and enjoy a distraction free evening.
    32. Scrapbook or photo album: I am all about making and preserving memories, so what better than creating a scrapbook together. You can include your favorite memories together, photos taken through the progression of your relationship, any ticket stubs you have and little mementos from your adventures. While creating your scrapbook, you can reminisce over each memory and enjoy each other’s company. If you made a custom playlist for Valentine’s Day, you could combine it with the scrapbooking activity!
    33. Exchange lists: You could write a list of some of the infinite list of reasons why you love and appreciate your partner, cut them out, put them in a mason jar, and give them to each other on Valentine’s Day. If your partner’s love language is words of affirmation, this is a brilliant, unique Valentine’s Day activity.

There are so many more unique Valentine’s Day ideas out there, so if you have any that I accidentally glossed over, please leave them in the comments!

  • Explore the Beautiful Lower Arroyo Seco Trail with Eileen + Steven

Explore the Beautiful Lower Arroyo Seco Trail with Eileen + Steven

The Lower Arroyo Seco Trail in Pasadena is a relaxed, scenic spot for couples photos, and Eileen and Stevenu2019s session shows why: leafy paths, a historic bridge and open sky give natural variety while you simply walk, talk and enjoy each other.

Eileen and Steven’s couples’ session was a blast to photograph. As a couple they are so fun to be around. They have a puppy called Nova, who joined us during their engagement session and was the cutest thing ever. She was so excitable and wanted to meet everybody who was on the trail.

    Taken by Elili Brown Photography

For their session we went to Lower Arroyo Seco trail and walked a little way across the trail until we got to a gorgeous stone bridge and a path down to the stream. The water was not fairly shallow and there were larger rocks across it so if you don’t want to get your pants wet, you can avoid it. The Lower Arroyo Seco Trail is a gorgeous oasis in Pasadena. As you can see behind Eileen and Steven, there is an abundance of trees, making it a prime location to observe the changing of the leaves.

As a photographer, one of my favorite things is to see the different ways couples interact. Every couple I work with responds to prompts differently, which keeps every session unique and exciting. My favorite part of their session was when they went off and wandered around the stream together. During this part of the session, they helped each other across the rocks and hugged each other. Truly, I adored how much they made each other laugh and smile. While they were crossing the rocks, their dog was following along and accidentally slipped and went for a little swim.

    Taken by Elili Brown Photography

Another one of my favorite prompts during couples’ sessions is having them walk together like they are drunk and can’t quite walk straight anymore. It always takes a second for couples to figure out how they normally act when they are tipsy. One of the beauties of Lower Arroyo Seco is the large, paved path, which gave Eileen and Steven plentiful space to execute prompts requiring movement, such as this one.

One thing to note is that the Lower Arroyo Seco trail is fairly busy, so you will occasionally have to wait for people to pass, but this is in no way inhibiting with how expansive the space is. If you have the flexibility to do so, I recommend doing your session during the week rather than the weekend to avoid crowds.

  • If You’re Wondering Where to Propose in Los Angeles, Here are 13 of the Best Spots

If You’re Wondering Where to Propose in Los Angeles, Here are 13 of the Best Spots

If you are wondering where to propose in Los Angeles, the key is choosing a spot that feels personal and offers a little privacy. Below are thirteen unique locations, from hidden gardens and quiet beaches to skyline overlooks, each with tips on timing and why it works.

In my guide ‘How to Plan the Perfect Proposal – A step-by-step guide’ we talked about the importance of adding a personal touch to your proposal as well as choosing the perfect location in Los Angeles for your proposal. The location will dictate how private your proposal is, whether or not friends and family will be there, whether there will be strangers nearby or will it be just you two. In my opinion, where you propose is a reflection of how well you know your partner and their dream proposal. So, all-in-all, where you get engaged is important. Stay tuned, next week we are going to get into the nitty gritty of choosing your location, what factors to consider, ways to personalize it, and more.

But this week, I thought I would give you some location ideas, to get the gears churning. So, if you are wondering where to propose, here are 13 gorgeous places in Los Angeles to propose.

1. Griffith Observatory

The Observatory already made my list of the 10 most romantic spots in Los Angeles for a date but would also make for a romantic engagement spot. You have the option of going with the park of the observatory. The park would be perfect for a more intimate proposal, you can set out a picnic blanket and candles, get some wine, and tell them you want them to be your forever person. Or you could propose in the Observatory itself, which offers panoramic views of LA. If you and your partner are constellation lovers, star gazing through the telescopes might be the perfect, romantic setting for your proposal. This spot offers breathtaking city views and a sky full of stars, setting the stage for an incredibly romantic proposal, especially during sunset or under the night sky.

2. El Matador State Beach

A classic proposal idea for anyone in Los Angeles is a beach proposal. So, my recommendation for your proposal is El Matador State Beach. El Matador is stunning, with rocky cliffs, beautiful sand, and what is more peaceful than the sound of crashing waves. The sunset from this beach is full of brilliant oranges and pinks, adding to the romantic nature of your proposal. El Matador falls about a 5 on a scale from 1-10 for privacy. There will be other beachgoers, but typically this beach is not as busy as Venice or Santa Monica Pier.

3. Walt Disney Concert Hall

If you are looking for a more elegant proposal, the metallic curves and reflective surfaces of the Walt Disney Hall might be perfect for your engagement proposal and photographs. The Hall is in downtown Los Angeles, so you could go explore afterward or grab a bite to each from one of many scrumptious spots. The Walt Disney ranks a 3 on the scale from 1-10 for privacy, with ten being the most private. The Hall itself is fairly busy, but you should be able to find a crevasse to escape into for your proposal.

4. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

Elili Brown Photography

The Huntington Library and Gardens also made my list of romantic date spots in Los Angeles but deserves a spot on this list as well. Flowers are inherently romantic and there is no shortage of them at the Huntington Gardens. Even though they are busy, there is so much to see, so you will be able to have your special moment without onlookers. The gardens are home to everything ranging from vibrant Japanese Gardens to romantic rose gardens with classic arches. The blooming flowers and greenery provide a stunning setting for your proposal, only adding to the magic. If you and your partner love going on strolls and enjoying nature, the Huntington Gardens are a perfect proposal spot if you want it to remain a surprise. They would not suspect a thing!

5. Union Station

Elili Brown Photography

If you want an intimate proposal, Union Station is probably not for you. The historic architecture and bustle of Union Station has a timeless romantic feel. It has an old-timey feel with its classic charm and design. Union Station has been part of love stories since 1939, each and every corner of Union Station, tells a story of romance and long-lasting love. Now it can be an integral part of yours.

6. Private Tour at Malibu Wines or Wine Tasting

At Malibu Wine Hikes you are able to set up private tours, which would be perfect for your proposal. They set you up with a tour guide who will help you find the most jaw-dropping views perfect of a romantic proposal. Or if you want an even more intimate setting, you can rent space at the winery, so no one is watching or overhearing your proposal. Another option is doing a wine tasting, which will be a unique memory forever tied to your proposal. Proposing here offers a cozy and relaxed setting amidst nature’s beauty, making it an intimate spot for a heartfelt moment.

7. Hollywood Bowl Overlook

The Hollywood Bowl Overlook has breathtaking panoramic views of the Hollywood sign, providing a romantic and intimate setting for a proposal. This is a perfect spot for an evening proposal, with the sun setting lighting up the city in beautiful colors. The privacy that the Overlook has is highly dependent on the time of day.

8. The Getty Center

The Getty is one of the most romantic spots in Los Angeles. This is the perfect proposal spot for all my art lovers out there. With stunning architecture, beautiful gardens, and world-class art collections, the Getty provides a sophisticated setting for your proposal. On the scale from 1-10 of privacy, this would be a 2. The Getty is a pretty busy spot, but you should be able to find a moment or two to yourselves for the proposal itself.

9. Downtown LA Arts District

The Downtown LA Arts District is honestly really cool and pretty (in my opinion). There are colorful murals, picture-perfect coffee shops, and overall has an industrial-chic vibe. This will add a unique and bold setting for your proposal. The privacy in the Arts District will vary heavily depending on where you are, but you should be able to find quiet spaces to profess your love.

10. Greystone Mansion and Park

The Greystone Mansion is reminiscent of the golden era of Hollywood. The classic architecture and beautiful gardens date back to Old Hollywood glamour, providing a historic charm and romantic ambience for your proposal. The Greystone Mansion and Park is a 5 from 1-10 on the privacy scale.

11. Rooftop and Romantic Restaurants

If you and your partner are foodies or love a romantic dinner date, planning your proposal at a rooftop restaurant or particularly romantic restaurant could be perfect. Proposing at a restaurant is perfect for an intimate and sophisticated proposal. While restaurants are busy, they often have seating designed for private conversations, so your dinner would be intimate while the proposal itself will likely garner attention from others. Los Angeles has an infinite number of rooftop restaurants, notably Perch in downtown Los Angeles. A rooftop restaurant proposal during sunset with beautiful views of the skyline and cityscape is perfect for a proposal.

12. LACMA Urban Lights

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) Urban Lights is a gorgeous presentation of street-lamps from the 1920s and 1930s that have been restored. The display of 202 lights is a magical setting, and is the perfect setting for an evening proposal, where the lights are glowing. If you want a private proposal, the Urban Lights are likely not for you.

13. Topanga State Park

Topanga State Park is located near Malibu and is a hidden oasis, providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. If you want a more intimate, private proposal, Topanga State Park is perfect for you. Proposing at Topanga State Park will be a proposal immersed in nature. There are extensive scenic trails with breathtaking views. If you time it right, you could propose to views of the sun-setting over the Pacific Ocean. The natural beauty of the park creates a serene setting for your proposal and your partner will be unsuspecting. An afternoon hike? Nothing out of the norm.

  • Sycamore Canyon Trailhead is Perfect for Your Engagement Photos

Sycamore Canyon Trailhead is Perfect for Your Engagement Photos

Sycamore Canyon Trailhead in Whittier is a wonderful engagement photography location because its shaded sycamore groves and gentle trails create soft, dappled light and a peaceful, natural backdrop that feels intimate and unhurried.

Trying to find a truly magical location for you engagement photographs? Well, Sycamore Canyon Trailhead in Whittier might be the perfect, dreamy location for you!

Soaking in the Natural Beauty at Sycamore Canyon Trailhead

The Sycamore Canyon Trailhead is a short drive from Pico Rivera and is absolutely stunning. The Trailhead has a small parking lot, which was mostly empty when I went. The trail itself is really easy to navigate, so you won’t get lost. And you can take my word for that because I am prone to getting lost everywhere I go. If my car did not mark its’ location, I cannot tell you how many times I would walk around in circles for hours trying to find it.

I was not planning on location scouting when I went, so I was wearing heeled boots (only two inches but still) and hiked about three miles total. So, if I can walk it in heels, you will absolutely fine and won’t work up a sweat before your engagement session.

A Tranquil Escape Surrounded by Nature’s Delights

The Sycamore Canyon Trailhead is a serene spot in Whittier that sets the stage for enchanting engagement photos amidst lush greenery and the symphony of the great outdoors.

As soon as you leave the parking lot, you are immediately immersed in a woodsy area with trees providing cover. At the end of this little section, there is a railing, which you can see in the photograph below, which is super cute.

There are endless trees and expansive views of rolling hills in the distance. The trees provide shade and a beautiful backdrop, you can even see the changing of the leaves. As shown below, this massive tree provides an oasis for photograph opportunities and lets in a little bit of sunlight making it look mystical. Personally, sunlight seeping in is one of my favorite aesthetics. Beyond, the scenery and views themselves, the Sycamore Canyon Trailhead was super quiet. Granted I went on a Wednesday midday, but I only ran into four people!

    Stunning Views for Unforgettable Snapshots

Every step on the trail promises a new, breathtaking view. From expansive hills to charming Sycamore trees, this trailhead is a treasure trove of scenic backdrops. It’s the perfect backdrop for capturing the magic of your love story. The trail itself is fairly wide, so we will have lots of room to work with for your engagement session.

    Tailored for Every Couple’s Style

Whether you’re aiming for a laid-back outdoor vibe or a more polished, sophisticated look for your engagement photographs, Sycamore Canyon Trailhead can cater to your needs. Its versatility means you can express your style, making your photoshoot a true reflection of your love. And as I mentioned above, it is super walkable, so you will not have to dress down to take photographs here. I would recommend bringing a separate pair of shoes for the walk.

Commemorate your Journey at Sycamore Canyon Trailhead

So to summarize, picking Sycamore Canyon Trailhead for your engagement photos will let you capture your love story in a quiet, enchanting setting that lets you be you. The area itself is super gorgeous and does not require strenuous hiking, but still lends itself to photographs that look mountainous.

So, you’re ready to pop the question “Will you marry me?” Here are 7 romantic marriage proposal ideas

If you are ready to propose and want something romantic and personal, the best proposal ideas reflect your own story. Below are seven ideas, from a private recreation of your first date to a surprise with your closest people nearby, to spark a moment you will both treasure.

If you are planning your marriage proposal and want a romantic and unique proposal idea, this blog post is for you. Throughout this blog, I will give you seven romantic proposal ideas that should allow you to craft the perfect, personalized proposal. At least one of these proposal ideas should work for you and your partner!

    1. Outdoor Adventure Marriage Proposal

An outdoor proposal can be incredibly romantic if done correctly. Let me paint a scene for you. It’s a gorgeous Sunday morning, the sun is out but it isn’t too hot yet. You and your partner have hiked up to a beautiful mountain top or maybe it is a stunning lakeside location. No one else is there yet, so it is just you two in nature. This is when you’d get down on your knee and ask them the big question “will you marry me?” This can create the perfect magical moment.

If this sounds good to you, here are 17 unique ways to Perfect your Outdoor marriage proposal!

    2. Surprise Picnic Marriage Proposal

A surprise picnic proposal in your favorite park or garden is super romantic. You can pack your favorite snacks, a blanket to set the tone, and maybe you bring along some champagne. The time of day is key; this is particularly romantic if done at sunset when the sky is absolutely gorgeous or at nighttime when the sky is starry. Imagine you are watching the stars, talking about your journey and then you propose. Another way to make this even more romantic is to plan a rooftop picnic with gorgeous views and amazing views of the starry night. You can set up a picnic blanket, grab some blankets, and cushions, lay out candles around you guys and enjoy the romantic evening.

    3. A Trip down Memory Lane Marriage Proposal

For this one, go somewhere super sentimental to you both: this could be where you went on your first date, where you met, where a significant life event happened, where the best date you ever went on was, where you told each other you loved one another, the options are endless. The beauty of this romantic proposal is how deeply personal it is. Reliving those glorious moments before you ask them to marry you, sets the mood and transports you to a dreamland where everything is perfect and it’s just you two against the world.

    4. A Romantic Dinner Marriage Proposal

A romantic dinner proposal is always a safe bet, and you can choose the ambience of the restaurant to match the vibe of your proposal. The restaurant could be a cozy dinner at a fancy restaurant or at a rooftop restaurant with stunning views. How you make this dinner more romantic really depends on your relationship and how your partner would like to be proposed to: if your partner prefers something lowkey, going to a cute, cozy restaurant that is not as sophisticated will go further and feel less stiff. Now, some other ways to enhance the romance at your proposal dinner: add candles, go out to their favorite cuisine, make sure the restaurant plays soft music, and dress the part. If you don’t know where to go here are my recommendations in Pasadena and Los Angeles!

    5. A Beachside Marriage Proposal

What is not romantic about a beachside proposal? For starters the ocean is beautiful, but if you are not immediately sold, let me paint another picture for you. The beach is empty, the sand is warm on your feet, and it is peaceful other than the sound of waves crashing. It is sunset and the sky has a mix of pinks and oranges with the sun at the center.  Or maybe it is after sunset, so the sky is starlit. Before you took your partner there, you wrote your proposal out in the sand or maybe you set up a cozy spot on the beach surrounded by candles. Or maybe you just get down on one knee during your shoreside walk. Regardless of the execution, being set at the beach immediately makes it a dreamy setting and thus a romantic proposal.

    6. A Hot Air Balloon Marriage Proposal

Just the name sounds romantic to me. Up high in the sky with magnificent views of your surroundings. You’re already at a high, in-awe of how beautiful the world looks from up high and the thrill of it all. And now you propose, you tell them all the reasons they are important and mean the world to you.

If you want to explore this unique marraige proposal idea some more, here is an insightful article by Napa Valley Aloft!

    7. A Technology-Inspired Marriage Proposal

Using technology in your proposal can make super personal and send you down memory lane. A few ways to do this are: create a video montage of your best, funniest, and happiest moments together or you could create a website recounting your journey. Surprising your partner with a compilation of your best moments will truly show them your dedication to your relationship and further solidify their love for you.

    To Conclude:

These are seven different ways to make your proposal romantic and unique. When in doubt, remember the key is to make sure it is personal – it should all be centered around your love story and what your partner will appreciate. But each of these ideas are amazing starting points and will create a personalized proposal your partner will appreciate.

  • The Beautiful Paradise Hidden in Pasadena, The Huntington Gardens and Library

The Beautiful Paradise Hidden in Pasadena, The Huntington Gardens and Library

The Huntington Gardens and Library in Pasadena is a stunning engagement photography location because its many themed gardens, from the Japanese garden to the desert and rose gardens, give you an incredible range of backdrops and light in a single, beautifully kept setting.

    The Huntington Gardens and Library

The Huntington Gardens and Library are a staple of Pasadena. There are so many different types of flowers at the Huntington Gardens. The first time I went to the Huntington Gardens, the number of different flowers shocked me. The expansive gardens are nothing short of stunning. Year-round the Gardens are a prime spot for photography sessions and there is no shortage of unique spots. The Huntington Gardens & Library do require an admission ticket, which is only $29 for adults. You can find more information on their website.

    Jasmine’s Portrait Photography Session

Unlike typical Los Angeles, when Jasmine and I met up for her session, it was cloudy and moody in Pasadena. Regardless, it was still warm outside, and the Huntington Gardens were beautiful.

Jasmine is one of the bubbliest clients I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Initially, she was worried about appearing awkward, because no experience modeling, but with a little instruction she was a natural. She was happy to go along with any of my ideas.

I am obsessed with so many of the photographs from this session, but my absolute favorites are with Jasmine sitting on this bench in the gardens and her face showing through the leaves. This bench was along the path towards the Rose Garden. The Huntington Rose Garden is gorgeous and a prime location for a photography session in April or late October (blooming season for roses). If you have never been to Huntington Gardens, I highly recommend going. It is a magical place with countless types of flowers and trees. Naturally embedded into the gardens are so many options for photography, there are scattered benches, and paths through the trees. If you want one location and numerous looks, Huntington Gardens is the perfect place to have your portrait photography session.

Here are some of my favorite photographs from the session!
