While Valentine’s Day is commonly thought of as reserved solely for romantic partners, it does not have to be and is honestly the perfect opportunity to affirm yourself and appreciate your personal growth. So, this year, join me and do something a little different. So, this is my guide to “How to be Your Own Valentine!” If you were searching for an occasion to indulge yourself this, is it!
So, here are eight contenders. If you have other ideas, drop them in the comments!
1. Plan a Solo Adventure for Valentine’s Day
Each and every one of us has at least one dream trip or adventure we want to go on. This could be a day trip down to Santa Barbara or simply a hike you’ve been dying to go on. So, this Valentine’s Day plan to go on that solo adventure. Some other ideas are exploring a new museum, going zip-lining, a pottery class, a jewelry class, going rock-climbing, go to a new national park, take the time to read that book that’s been sitting on your bookshelf.
These activities will give you a chance to explore a new side of yourself and take time for yourself.
2. Host your Own Valentine’s Movie Marathon
Who says you need a romantic partner to have a movie marathon. You can have your own or you could invite some of your best friends over and plan a movie night with some of each person’s favorites. So, what goes into a Valentine’s Day themed movie night? I am glad you asked. If it was me, I would choose films that celebrate love, women empowerment, and self-discovery. Then I would make some buttery popcorn, get out my favorite chocolates and sweets, get into my coziest pajamas, and watch movies all night long. Heck, the best part of this movie marathon, is that it DOES NOT matter what movies anyone else likes, just you!
3. Treat Yourself to a Spa Day or Have an At Home Spa Day
You could either go into a spa or do this one at home. If you go into a spa salon indulge in every treatment that sounds interesting or you’ve been wanting to try (or what your budget permits). You could get a massage, a facial, and a manicure or pedicure. Or maybe there is a specific scrub you want to try. Or if you are doing this at home, get a face mask or two, a bath bomb, and your favorite wine. Then prepare a bath, get your face mask on, and read your book or watch your favorite movie in the bath with a glass of wine in hand.
4. Cook Yourself a Valentine’s Day Meal
If you are busy like me, you do not often have the time to cook a proper, delicious meal. So, this Valentine’s Day set out the time to plan a delicious (healthy) meal. If you like experimenting, you could find some new recipes or come up with your own recipe. Then set out some candles and get yourself flowers for your dining room table. Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy. Or if cooking is not your thing, you could pick up your favorite take-out food, set the table with flowers and candles and tuck into your take-out. If you need to relax and slow-down, then put on some comfy clothes and enjoy. The most important part of being your own valentine is listening to what your body and mind need!
5. Practice Creative Self-Expression
Now, don’t tell me that you are not creative, because every single person is, just in different ways. Say you’re an analytical scientist, you are still creative. You are utilizing the data you’re collecting and coming up with creative solutions. So, this Valentine’s Day, create something. You could paint, write, do something crafty like crocheting or felting, play music and dance your heart out. Get rid of any self-imposed expectations and do the first thing that comes to mind.
6. Take Yourself Shopping this Valentine’s Day
This one falls into the indulge yourself category, but this Valentine’s Day treat yourself to a shopping adventure or buy yourself that one thing you’ve had your eye on but keep coming up with reasons not to buy. It could be a new outfit, workout gear, make-up, lingerie, or it could be getting yourself a pedicure (Lavender Nails here in Pasadena is amazing!). Regardless of what it is, treat yourself to something you love and brings you happiness!
7. Plan a Hangout (In-person or Virtual) with Friends
If you don’t want to spend Valentine’s Day by yourself organize a virtual or in-person hangout with your closest friends. You could have a game night (Code Names is a super fun game to play online), you could have a movie watch party, or simply facetime and talk about all the new happenings in each of your lives. This way you are spending Valentine’s Day with everyone you love and cherish!
8. Journaling! Practice Gratitude and Self-Reflection
Time to get that journal out! This year take some time to reflect on your journey and how far you’ve come. You should be proud of yourself. So, here are some Valentine’s Day writing prompts: write yourself a love letter, jot down 15 affirmations, come up with 15 goals, come up with 15 accomplishments you are proud of (could be as simple as made myself dinner or went on a run or drew something cool), write down all of your strengths, or you could think about changes you want to make! We are all our biggest critics, so this Valentine’s Day it is time to take a moment for self-love.
To Conclude
Hopefully, this gave you some ideas as to how to be your own valentine this year. Truly, you are an independent badass and deserve to take this time to do something just for you. Regardless of if you decide to go on a solo-adventure, have a DIY spa day, enjoy a cozy movie night, cook yourself a gourmet meal, start reading a new book, or spend the evening journaling, remember that you are the most important person in your life. So treat yourself kindly and be proud of how far you’ve come.
