To plan a memorable beach proposal, pick a beach that means something to you both, arrive about an hour before sunset for the best light, and quietly sort the logistics (a photographer, a plan for wind or crowds, and where you will kneel) so you can stay fully present in the moment.
If you and your partner are beach lovers, proposing by the ocean might be the perfect choice. With the sun-setting behind you and the waves crashing along the shoreline, your proposal has the potential to be incredibly romantic. To ensure your beach proposal goes off without a hitch, here are the most important factors to consider: the beach, the time of day, whether you want the moment captured by a professional photographer, weather, organizing transportation to the beach (for them once you have set up the proposal). And with all proposals, ensuring your engagement ring is sized correctly.
Which Beach to Propose at
If there are beaches that hold special significance to you and your partner, I would recommend proposing there! Otherwise, look for quieter beaches with beautiful backdrops. If it is in your budget, you can even go ahead and reserve a private beach.
Time of Day
I recommend either at sunrise or sunset. The lighting at these times of day is optimal, so if you are hiring an engagement photographer, you will have the most spectacular engagement photographs. If you are both morning people, beaches are always quieter in the morning, so it might be a good idea to do an early morning proposal.
Music
Do you want music playing in the background or would you rather there were no distractions. The music could be a live band or it could be a playlist you have curated or perhaps you have a shared Spotify playlist that is special to you both.
Beach Proposal Ideas
Picnic
Candle Lit Picnic:
You can use fake candles and scatter them across your picnic blanket or just around the perimeter. You could also create a walkway up to the picnic blanket. If you are creating an aisle, you could get a sign with your names or that says, “Will you marry me?” to stand behind the blanket.
Flower Petals Scattered Around the Picnic
You can scatter flower petals (like rose petals) around and on-top of the picnic blanket.
Snacks and Wine
This can be applied to any picnic blanket proposal idea, but I would get some wine or champagne to commemorate the moment they say yes. If you do not want to pop the question the second you sit down at the picnic blanket, I would get some snacks like grapes, crackers, and cheese. Just make sure you keep an eye out for seagulls!
At a Bonfire
In Los Angeles, there are some public beaches that allow you to have private bonfires. Once you secure a spot, set up the bonfire and layout some comfy pillows and blankets. A bonfire is perfect for a cozy beach proposal. You could even bring the ingredients to make s’mores! The bonfire and s’mores allows you to reset before you propose, so you are less likely to jumble over your words.
A Photoshoot
To pull off a photoshoot proposal, you are going to organize a romantic couples photoshoot on the beach. Your partner is going to provide input into the photographer and beach. The beauty of this proposal is that they won’t think twice about wanting a quiet beach and dressing up! Then you will separately email or call the photographer and let them know that you intend to propose. Together you can concoct a plan to execute your proposal. One of my personal favorites is having your partner turn away and tell them that you are going to surprise attack them with a bear hug. Then I tell them that I actually want to do a different pose first and that they need to turn around. When they turn around, you will be on your knee and bam. Your proposal is captured perfectly, and they are entirely unsuspecting.
Rose Petal Path
This fits in with a picnic blanket beach set up, but you can set up a pathway up to the picnic blanket out of rose petals. If you don’t want your partner to anticipate the beach proposal, this one is not going to be the right choice for you.
Rose Petal Heart
You could even make a heart out of rose petals and write your initials in the middle. Or You could even leave it blank and propose in the center.
Pet Proposal
If you have a pet or your partner does, you are likely obsessed with it. So, they would love if their pet is a core part of their special moment. There are tons of beaches that are pet friendly, but not all are, so double check and look up a dog friendly beach and bring them along.
A Sunrise Beach Proposal
We all talk about sunset proposals a lot because they are stunning, but so is a sunrise proposal. And even better, beaches are deserted in the early hours, so any popular beach will feel like a private beach. The only pitfall is that it is more challenging to hide a photographer. Although, all photographers can pretend to be taking photographs of the waves crashing, so as long as you make a mark in the sand to know where to propose so you are in frame, it should not be too hard.
Write it in the Sand
This one can be challenging depending on the tide, but you can write it in the sand, so when you take your partner on a walk along the beach, you stumble upon it, and then you go down on one knee and as them to marry you. Another way you could do this is write a heart in the sand with your partner and put your initials in the middle. Then after drawing this, turn to your partner and ask them for the rest of their lives.
Downfalls of a Beach Proposal
The main pitfall is the unpredictability of the weather. Luckily, planning a beach proposal in Los Angeles has less variation in the weather than if you were planning to propose on an East Coast Beach. But regardless, it still needs to be taken into consideration. To circumvent this problem, make sure you have a plan B and check the weather forecast in the upcoming days. This way, if it is meant to be a heavy downpour, you can quickly pivot!
The second shortcoming is that beaches are public. So, unless you secure a private beach for the moment, you and your partner will likely be sharing the beach with others. If you are trying to execute a surprise proposal, onlookers might draw attention to your proposal before you’re ready to get down on your knee. So, I would recommend either choosing a quieter beach or renting out a private beach. In Los Angeles, a gorgeous beach is El Matador Beach, but I can guarantee there will be at least one other person proposing there. Whereas Crystal Cove Beach is much quieter. So, at Crystal Cove you will be the only one proposing and it will be a private, intimate moment.

Kenneth Hahn Park is one of the most versatile spots in Los Angeles for engagement photos because a single visit gives you rolling lawns, a lake, wooded trails and downtown skyline views, so you get several different backdrops without driving to a second location.
Kenneth Hahn Park is located in the heart of Culver City and is a massive park with tons of different activities and sights to see. For your engagement photography session, this park can fit numerous aesthetics, making it a prime location. I love incorporating movement into my engagement photography sessions, which has led to parks being high up on my favorite location list. This one in particular is so large that there is no shortage of secluded spots to chase each other, execute surprise attacks, slow dance, play tag, the list goes on. And to top it off, Kenneth Hahn Park has the views to go with the spaciousness.
The Lower Kenneth Hahn Park
In the lower park there is a pond with wooden bridges to meander on and there are benches around its perimeter. So, if you wanted to sit, talk, and relax it would be the prime spot. On the water there are cute little ducks swimming around. If you are like me and enjoy the occasional people watching, there are always people here. Directly across from the pond are expansive grassy areas. The green grassy area is massive, so you don’t have to be near anyone at all and even better the Kenneth Hahn Park has gazebos. So, if you wanted to be outside, but sheltered or out of the direct sunlight, this is a perfect option for you.
Upper Kenneth Hahn Park
Then if you head up to the upper area of the park, there are gorgeous views of Los Angeles. It is a really fun game to try and identify exactly where in Los Angeles you are from this spot.
Thankfully, Kenneth Hahn Park has a second parking lot at the top of the hill. Otherwise, it would be quite the trek. This upper Kenneth Hahn Park area is much smaller, but there is still tons of space to utilize and enjoy. There are picnic benches scattered around the upper park area. A few of these have tree coverage, providing shade, which will become even more important as we get into the summer months.
When I was here for Lily and Adrian’s Couples’ session, read more here, we started to leave and head down to the lower park, when I saw the gorgeous golf course with a picturesque sunset. The sun was peeking out through the trees, creating the perfect atmosphere for some silhouettes.
Photo Opportunities
Car Themed Engagement Photography Session:
Kenneth Hahn Park lends itself to more engagement photography session ideas than just roaming around the park. I would love to do a session involving your car. Imagine a drive-in movie, but at the park. You could pop your trunk open or sit on the hood of your car and get out some snacks. The engagement photographs could be of y’all feeding each other and laughing your asses off. And even inside the car, as a photographer it would be so cool to incorporate your interior rear-view mirror and angle it so that your faces are illuminated. Another fun idea would be shooting through the side mirrors. Additionally, I have not done this yet, but there are really unique engagement photography sessions that utilize your headlights. You and your fiancée would be in front of this dancing, cuddling, kissing, etc.
Another idea would be centering your engagement photography session around picnic benches. I discussed this engagement photography session idea in my blog post about Alhambra Park, which you can read here, but I have so many ideas for this. You can sit on the table either next to each other or in someone’s lap, you can kiss across the table, chase each other around the table. You could even have one person jump off the table into the other’s arms. Another idea is having one person sit face forwards and the other perpendicular to them and stare at each other, trace each other’s faces, kiss, rest their head on the other’s shoulder.
Golf Themed Engagement Photography Session
My last idea for this blog post is doing a golf themed engagement session. Although personally because I cannot play golf, I would prefer to do this at a mini golf course. But you can incorporate the golf clubs and chase each other around the golf course. We can write your initials on a golf ball and have one in the middle joining you both with a heart. Behind the golf balls you could both be kissing or looking adoringly at each other.
All of this is to say that there are so many ways to utilize the various amenities at Kenneth Hahn Park. And if you are animal lovers, you could even feed the ducks or bring your dog(s) and play in the park with them!

Your engagement photography session encapsulates your relationship and your dynamic in a way your wedding is unable to. An engagement session can take place anywhere: the beach, where you had your first date, a coffee shop with sentimental value, a gorgeous mountainous trail, or even at your home. Whereas your wedding (if you choose not to elope) is more heavily restricted by guest count and venue. And to be frank is more costly to personalize. (granted some of these ideas won’t be cheap). So, without further ado here is a list of 13 things to do your engagement photos.

1. Engagement Photo Guest Signing Album for your Wedding:
This album will serve multiple purposes: it will be a keepsake and an interactive feature at your wedding. You can place this near the entrance, so as your guests arrive, they can leave you a little message. At the end of your wedding the book will be completely full of heartfelt messages. So, you’ll be walking away from your wedding with gorgeous photographs and precious words from those closest to you.
2. Save the Dates or Wedding Invitations:
What better to use for Save the Dates than photographs taken to commemorate the big step you’re taking with your partner. You can go through all of your photographs and choose your favorite that captures your personalities and sheer excitement. Or if you don’t want your wedding invitations to be a photograph of you both, you can use it as inspiration for your invitations. If you wanted to take it up another notch, you could even turn your Save the Date cards into little magnets, so people can stick them to their fridges.
3. Wall Art for your House:
I’ve said it once and I will say it again. Your engagement photos are completely customizable, so what else could you possibly want in your household. In your wedding photographs there are expectations around what you should wear, but those don’t exist for your engagement photos. So if you want to wear cargo pants or a flowy dress, you sure can. If it was me, these are the photographs that I would want to hang around my home. They will make your home feel like yours and add warmth. I know if it was me, I would walk around the house and smile when I saw them. So, you can choose a few of your favorites and have them professionally printed and framed. Most photographs will print them for you, so all you have to do is ask! I personally do reveal sessions with all my clients and show them what their wall art could look like!
4. Gift prints to your family:
Most parents and family members are super excited when their children or relatives get engaged. So, choose your favorite few family members and print your favorite one or two engagement photos to send to them. At least personally, I know they would be ecstatic and cherish them. If you have never had any printed artwork, I will tell you now, it holds so much mor meaning then a photograph sent over text! I know my cousins have prints of my grandparents in their homes!
5. Engagement Photo Album:
You could have an album dedicated to your engagement photos. My parents did not have professional photographer for their engagement photos or at their wedding, and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve wanted to go through photographs from their engagement & wedding and there are NONE. An engagement album will capture your excitement for this next step and hold a different significance than your wedding photographs. And therefore, it deserves its own album. This will let you return to these memories and emotions anytime you want over the rest of your life.
6. Wedding Website:
Your wedding website gives your guests a glimpse into your relationship and your journey. You could incorporate your engagement photos in numerous ways: you could have a slideshow on its homepage or have a gallery solely of your engagement photos.
7. Thank you Cards:
You could use thank you cards when guests RSVP to your wedding or after the wedding itself. Most wedding photographs have a month (minimum) turnaround time, so you could utilize one of your engagement photos to create personalized thank you cards. These cards will convey you appreciation for your guests and also a permanent memento of your special day!
8. Make a Montage of your Engagement Photos for your Reception and/or Wedding:
This one might belong higher up on the list, because it is one of my favorites. But you can create a montage of your engagement photos to display at either your wedding reception, ceremony, or rehearsal dinner. A montage of your engagement photos will add a personal touch to either event and allow guests to share in your apparent joy and love for one another. You could also set up a TV monitor with this slideshow on repeat at your wedding, so your guests can enjoy your engagement photos at their own leisure during your special day!
9. Create a Gallery Reception Wall:
This could be the first wedding feature your guests see as they walk into your wedding reception. One of the beauties of a gallery reception wall is that couples can enjoy it as their own pace. And it will serve as a conversation starter between guests. Your reception wall can include other photographs too, like if you are particularly outdoorsy, you can have photos of hiking adventures you’ve gone on.
10. Social Media:
Right after you get engaged, you will want to share the news with all of your loved ones and the quickest way to do so, is by posting on social media. So, what better than to use your engagement photos. By using your engagement photos to share the news, you will let other people feel like a part of your journey and feel equally excited for you.
11. Make a Calendar with your Engagement Photos:
I love this idea. You can take it into work with you or keep it at you’re at home office (if you work from home), but you can create a custom calendar. All you need is twelve gorgeous photographs. Every month you will appreciate a new photograph telling a new story about your relationship. Then even as work or life gets stressful and crazy busy, you will be able to smile through it, because every time you look at your calendar you see your partner.
12. Create a mini album to keep with you:
If you couldn’t tell I am super sentimental. But I love the idea of having a mini album that can hang out in your car or office at work. This way you can share your journey and love story with others as you go around and provide some grounding comfort. At least personally, it would remind me of the joy and positive things in my life as I am super stressed at work.
Alhambra Park is a great engagement photography spot because it packs mature shade trees, open lawns and quiet tucked-away corners into one easy-to-reach park near Pasadena, giving you soft light and a mix of backdrops in a calm, uncrowded setting.
Alhambra Park is near where I live in Pasadena and that means that I have spent lots of time walking around and through the park. And if you are a photographer or know any, you will know that means I have tons of ideas for couples’ sessions there. So, throughout this blog post, I will share some of my favorite pose ideas and prompts for Alhambra Park, why it is an amazing session location, and some of its history.

Alhambra Park’s History:
Alhambra Park was built in 1906 and first known as Story Park. Honestly, I wish the name hadn’t changed because Story Park is the perfect name for a park used to tell your love story. But alas the name was changed to pay homage to Alhambra’s rich cultural heritage in 1909. Throughout its life, it has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, adding in recreational facilities, such as the basketball and tennis courts in addition to the swimming pool. The Park itself is roughly 12 acres and full of grassy spots to sit and read a book and even has covered picnic tables perfect for birthday parties or working outside! The park even includes an amphitheater that is used to host free concert and movies nights over the summer.
There are infinite engagement photography opportunities at Alhambra Park. I love using open space in my photography sessions and this Park has the perfect balance. Additionally, because the park is 12 acres, there is enough space that you can find a secluded spot to work with. So, you do not have to deal with tons of people in the background. Additionally, there are massive palm trees scattered throughout the parking creating shady patches. If you are having your engagement session or couples’ session during the day, this is ideal, so you don’t have to deal with your subjects being blown out or recruiting a handy dandy ND filter.
The spaciousness of the park allows you to give your clients prompts or instructions that require more movement. For example, you can have your clients run around, playing tag, pretend they’re drunk, or spin each other around. Even though there are lots of parks throughout Los Angeles, a lot of them are super busy and it can be hard to find uninterrupted space.
As shown above, there are sheltered picnic tables. The vines going up the side of the columns are gorgeous and extremely photographable. There are also speckled picnic tables throughout the park that are not covered. Personally, I would love to do a photography session utilizing these.
Alhambra Park Engagement Posing Ideas:
As I mentioned in my blog post about Amanda and Kevin’s couples’ session, their session was my Valentine’s Special, so we incorporated my beautiful, handcrafted crochet heart and body pillows into their couples’ session. Per usual, I have so many ideas we cannot fit all of them into our one hour session, but here are some examples.
I start the majority of my session’s playing a silly couples’ card game, which forces you to listen up and do silly things, like spin around like washing machine, or do parkour off nearby objects.
The photographs from these prompts are not always winners, but they help loosen up my clients for the rest of my prompts. (I call them prompts not poses, because the majority of them require some movement).
Using the picnic tables:
Have one person sit on the table and one on the bench. Then the person sitting on the table can play with the other person’s hair and bend down and kiss their forehead or cheek. This is a sitting version of a spiderman kiss.
They can kiss each other across the picnic table.
It can be a great way to start a piggyback ride around the park
They can share some snacks
They can both sit on the table, look at each other, kiss each other.
If they are straddling the bench facing each other, you can have them play the blind kissing game aka try to kiss each other with their eyes closed. The best way to do this is have them lean as far back as possible first, then close their eyes, and then have the go in for the kiss. Sometimes they make it but when they don’t it is usually hilarious.
Have one person sit facing you and the other sit horizontally across their lap. From this position they can play with each other’s hands, look at each other and retell their first date story or first impressions of each other.
Using just the grass
You can have them drunk walk towards you or walk in zigzags holding hands so that they are constantly bumping hips and stumbling.
You can have them play tag. In this park you can do this around a tree. So that they are chasing each other around the tree and after a little while somebody pulls the other back into them with a kiss on their cheek.
If they are down, you can have them do pretend there’s a hill and roll together. Eventually, they will stop rolling and it will cause them to laugh.
You can have them hold each other’s hands and spin each other like we used to do in elementary and middle school.
You can have one person sit and the other lie across their lap and have them look at each other, trace each other’s faces, etc.
You can have them sit facing each other and do rapid fire kisses all over the other person’s face.
You can have them kiss up against a tree.
Piggyback rides
You can have one person run and jump into the other’s arms and spin in circles.
You can have someone surprise the other person in a bear attack. So somebody is facing away with their eyes closed and then the other comes from behind startling them. Often this is super cute if they can lift them off the ground.
You can’t go wrong with some classic airplane arms.
You can have them tickle each other.
A classic…the butt lift. This one is lifting your partner up with your arms underneath their butt. Then the lifted person kicks a leg up and you look into each other’s eyes.
Another classic…slow dancing with some dips, twirls, and lots of precious moments.
The Playground
If there are not too many children, the playground would also be super fun to incorporate.
You can have them chase each other around the park.
Go down the slides.
Swing holding hands in between the swings, or push each other.
Sit on the same swing and look at each other.
Help each other across the monkey bars.
Hide in the playground and scare each other.
Amenities at Alhambra Park:
Playgrounds
Alhambra Park has an beautiful playground, consisting of slides, swings, climbing structures. Basically, anything a little kid could ever want.
Picnic Areas
As I described earlier on, there are tons of shaded picnic tables and benches. So, you can enjoy your lunch underneath the shade or with the sun shining down on you.
Sports Facilities
Alhambra Park has tennis courts, basketball courts, grassy fields for soccer. Basically, everything an athlete could want.
Amphitheater
Alhambra Park even has its own amphitheater. Throughout the summer months this is used for live music, theatrical performances, and community events!

This is perfect for all of my outdoorsy couples The Eaton Canyon Falls is in the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a serene, gorgeous setting for your proposal. This area is absolutely gorgeous. The Falls are in the foothills of Altadena and what could be more magical than proposing in front of a waterfall. And even better, you get to go on a hike through the canyon, surrounded by sky high trees and calming nature sounds. And then at the end of your trek in right in front of the waterfall, you get down on one knee and ask them to marry you. If you don’t want other people to watch your proposal, you can find a secluded spot near the waterfall or propose along the way and take in the waterfall as a newly engaged couple!
Crystal Cove State Park
If you are a beach lover or want both a mountainous and beachy look to your engagement photographs The Crystal Cove State Park is perfect for you. The Crystal Cove State Park offers picture perfect views of the Southern California coastline. The park has beautiful sandy beaches, views of rugged cliffs and the expansive ocean. And nearby there are grassy areas that look like mountainous meadows, so you can even enjoy these. And if you are hiring a photographer, like myself, you can ask them to do multiple looks and have one of them be here. This way there is more diversity in your engagement photographs!
You and your partner can walk along the coast with your feet in the water, enjoying a romantic evening until you get down on one knee. You could even make a day of it and wait until the sun starts to set casting a golden glow across the water. For the proposal itself, you could propose out in the open or find a secluded spot for your proposal. If you ask me, beaches are a super romantic place to propose, and Crystal Cove State Park lets you make a day out of your proposal.
Cielo Farms Vineyards
Personally, I used to dream of getting married on a vineyard, so I think they’re super romantic. So this one goes out to all of my wine lovers. If you are going all out you can rent it out. This ensures your special moment is private and just for you two (and a photographer if you want one). One of the beauties of a vineyard is that a photographer, like myself, can hide amongst the grapevines, snapping shots while your partner is unsuspecting! After you pop the big question, you can enjoy champagne and a glass of wine.
Cielo Farms Vineyard is nestled in the hills of Malibu. It has gorgeous views, creating a marvelous setting for a proposal. There are so many options for how you propose at Cielo Farms. To name a couple: you could propose during a casual wine tasting or while wandering around the rows and rows of grapevines during a beautiful sunset.
Stonewall Ranch Malibu
This one if for my lovers of the outdoors. Stonewall Ranch in Malibu is stunning. It has views of mountain ranges and has trails adorned with wildflowers for you to explore with your partner. So, if you want a private proposal with stunning views of wildflowers and mountains this is perfect for you. There are also grassy areas which would be perfect for engagement photographs or simply your proposal. The ranch is truly breathtaking. All of these attributes, make it one of the best proposal spots in Los Angeles. But, if you have already gotten engaged and are starting to search for your wedding venue, this is a fantastic option!
Franklin Canyon Park
If you want to feel like you’re in a mountain wonderland with beautiful lake to gaze out at, Franklin Canyon Park is the answer to all your questions. Franklin Canyon Park is perfect for your proposal, because it offers you privacy and who doesn’t want gorgeous views. The park has the beautiful lake, hiking trails, and woodlands making it perfect. Parts are even paved, so if you want to wear heels, you won’t have to worry about breaking your ankle. There are so many spots for you to pop the big question. So, depending on where along the Los Angeles River you are, there are so many spots for your proposal. It could be underneath the shade of a massive bridge or alongside a quiet, calm stretch of water.
Los Angeles State Historic Park
The Los Angeles Historic Park is located near downtown Los Angeles. It is a charming park perfect for your proposal. The park is a peaceful escape from the busy city and an amazing choice for an intimate proposal. Before or after you propose, you and your partner can wander around the park’s different paths adorned by greenery and surrounded by historic buildings and various cultural landmarks. There are so many spots within the Los Angeles State Historic Park for you to propose, but one of its beauties compared to other locations on this list is the privacy it offers. So, if you want your proposal to be just between the two of you this might be a winner!
The Broad
If you or your partner are a museum lover or an art lover, this one is for you. The Broad is a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles. Unlike other museums, The Broad has free entry, and provides a stunning variety of artwork, making it the perfect pre- or post-proposal activity. The museum has works from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, and Andy Warhol. Inside The Broad itself there are tons of different spots for you to ask your partner to marry you; The Broad is physically close to tons of other romantic locations downtown which would also be wonderful choices for your proposal.
Little Tokyo
Little Tokyo is one of the most iconic neighborhoods in Los Angeles. So, proposing to your partner there offers a culturally rich setting and a vibrant atmosphere. Little Tokyo is in downtown Los Angeles and has a wonderful blend of Japanese culture, cuisine, and community, which make it a good spot for your proposal. Prior to the proposal itself, you can meander along the streets, explore various shops, eat authentic food, and visit cultural landmarks. To name a couple spots in Little Tokyo, you could propose at, you could propose underneath the glowing lanterns in the Japanese Village Plaza, or in the James Irvine Japanese Garden. So, all this goes to say that Little Tokyo is one of the best proposal spots in Los Angeles, in part because there are so many options.
Los Angeles City Hall
The Los Angeles City Hall is in downtown Los Angeles and has stunning architecture that will make the background of your engagement photographs more interesting. There are also grassy areas in front of the City Hall perfect to diversify your engagement photos. Some of my favorites are you and your fiancée walking up the stairs of the historic building holding hands, stopping halfway up to kiss each other, and doing the famous butt lift. If you do not know what this is, it is where you lift your partner up with your hands underneath their butt. Here’s an example:
The Los Angeles City Hall is also perfect if you want multiple destinations, because it is in the heart of downtown LA and therefore close to other prime photo spots like Walt Disney Concert Hall, Angels Flight Stairway, The Last Bookstore, the Bradbury, the list goes on!

Carbon Canyon Regional Park is worth the drive because it hides a small grove of towering coast redwoods, an unexpectedly dramatic forest backdrop you will not find anywhere else near Los Angeles, perfect for an intimate engagement session.
Carbon Canyon Regional Park offers a unique, drop-dead gorgeous scenery for your engagement session. The towering redwood trees provide a romantic canopy. If you did not want to walk the 10-minutes to the redwood trees, we can take your engagement photographs near the lake and park. lakeside is serene and intimate, and you can enjoy a romantic walk around them. I went with Roshni and Lucas in January, and it was quiet, so you can enjoy some peace and quiet during your session. Carbon Canyon Regional Park is the only place in Southern California with Redwood trees, so you are in for a treat. With that being said, if you go to Carbon Canyon Regional Park and expect to see Redwood trees the size of those in North California, you will be sorely disappointed, but regardless they are still gorgeous, and a gem hidden away in Brea.
Carbon Canyon Regional Park Accessibility and Convenience
Carbon Canyon Regional Park is a slice of heaven for all nature enthusiasts, but if you don’t fit that bill, it is super accessible. The trails are well maintained, making it really easy to navigate and they do not require hiking shoes of any sort. The park also has bathrooms, so you won’t be bursting at the seams.
Time of Day
There is truly no wrong time to have your engagement session at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. The redwood trees provide a shady overcast, so the sun won’t burn you alive. In fact, it will provide a nice glow, making this the perfect location if you do not want to do an evening session. Granted during the prime sunset hours, it will provide a warm glow over the environment surrounding you, creating an intimate, romantic atmosphere.
Because the redwoods provide lots of shade, if you are a photographer and planning to use Carbon Canyon Regional Park for an upcoming engagement session, I recommend going a tad earlier. This will allow you to capture the magic of the sun seeping through the leaves and onto the couple.
Permit Costs
Carbon Canyon Regional Park requires a photography permit, which costs $25 per hour, for any professional photography services. The entrance fee to the park itself is $3 or $5 dollars depending on the day.
My Personal Experience at Carbon Canyon Regional Park
Recently, I had the pleasure of doing Roshni and Lucas’s couples session at Carbon Canyon Regional Park . I met Roshni my first year of college, so this was a real treat. The area near the redwood trees is wide open, which allowed Roshni and Lucas to wander around and explore the space on their own (one of my favorite prompts during engagement sessions). The trees provided the perfect place for an adult game of hide-and-seek, which was super funny to watch and made for some of the cutest photographs.

Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea is the perfect location for your engagement session. The magnificent trees and scenery will set the stage for romance. If you are a nature lover, Carbon Canyon will memorialize your love story and reflect your passion for the outdoors. If you are not looking for somewhere to have tour engagement session, but rather a peaceful Sunday picnic date, the park has some of the most perfect, trees with luscious leaves providing you with the perfect amount of shade. Be warned of the geese, if you are afraid of geese like me, they tend to be wandering around the park.
Lastly, engagement photographs signify the beginning of the next step in your journey together. You can’t get the moment back once it passes, so you should make the most of it and cherish the moment and preserve the memories. So, in my opinion, your engagement session location matters a lot and should reflect who you are as a couple.
Even when the weather does not cooperate, a session in the Carbon Canyon redwoods still shines. When rain rolled in on Roshni and Lucas, the misty light and quiet forest made their couples photos more intimate and cinematic, proof that a little weather is nothing to fear.
The weather conspired against Roshni and Lucas’s couples’ photography session at the Carbon Canyon Redwoods. Los Angeles is known for always being funny, yet it wasn’t on this particular day. We managed to have our session at Redwood Grove on the one overcast day. Regardless, their photographs are brilliant and beautiful.
I cannot choose a sole favorite moment of their session. We were all mesmerized by how beautiful the Carbon Canyon redwoods are. I have never seen the redwoods in Northern California, so I don’t have a good comparison point unlike Lucas. So, to me the Redwoods in the Redwood Grove were magnificent.
As a couple, Roshni and Lucas are absolutely adorable. I loved that they brought their picnic. They had a wicker basket with some fruit and laid out their blanket in the middle of the Carbon Canyon Redwoods. The picnic was such a cute idea and lent itself to so many romantic photographs. If I had to choose two moments they would be: when they fed each other pieces of a clementine and when they laid down on the blanket in opposite directions and took a quick “nap” on each other. I love photographs that reflect an activity you might do outside of your engagement or couples’ session.
My favorite part of their session was when Lucas snuck up on Roshni. Obviously, when there are the massive Carbon Canyon Redwoods around you, you are obligated to play a little hide and seek and scare each other. The first time, he did not hear me say go, so he was waiting and waiting, not moving a muscle. Roshni was standing there and waiting in front of a giant redwood for him to scare her and heard absolute silence. She made a few comments along the lines of “wow, you are moving so quietly” and kept squirming, anticipating his sneak “attack.” Shortly after, Lucas came out from behind the tree and said “oh, was I meant to go?” We all thought it was really funny. Afterwards, he executed a picture-perfect surprise attack.
The only downfall of the Carbon Canyon Redwoods & Regional Park is the geese. I personally, am moderately afraid of geese. More than the geese themselves, stepping in goose pop or messing up your clothes due to it, is less than ideal. So, if you are hesitant to get messy, I would watch out and find a different location. There are so many beautiful spots in Southern California. So, if you don’t do your engagement session at the Carbon Canyon Redwoods you’ll find somewhere else just as spectacular. So, if you go during goose migration season, beware and plan accordingly.

Kenneth Hahn Lower Park in Culver City is a lovely, low-key spot for couples photos, as Lily and Adrianu2019s session shows: lush lawns, gentle shade and room to wander made for relaxed, natural images without crowds to work around.
For Lily and Adrian’s couples’ photography session we went to Kenneth Hahn Lower Park which is in Culver City. The Kenneth Hahn Park is gorgeous and has so many different photo opportunities – there is the Lower park which has a lake, there are wooden bridges, expansive grassy fields, and lastly the beautiful Kenneth Hahn View Point . We began our session near the View Point. The lookout gives you gorgeous views of downtown Los Angeles and the mountains behind it. You can even see the Hollywood sign from there, so if you are directionally challenged like me, you can use this it to figure out where other cities are.
In front of the Kenneth Hahn View Point there is a large grassy space with some beautiful trees and picnic tables. We started our session on the grassy area and eventually moved to the tables. Lily and Adrian are an adorable couple and play fought each other, which are some of my favorite photographs from the session. Not all couples can look so cute while “threatening” to punch each other.
I had Lily and Adrian boomerang each other toward me. They ended up dancing a little bit at the end of the movement. This created some adorable photos where they are smiling at each other, hair flying with each spin. These two will tell you that they are not photogenic, but in my eyes, they absolutely are, and you can’t tell me any different. These two clearly love each other so much!
After we finished up at the Kenneth Hahn View Point, we started walking back to the car. On the walk, I saw a magnificent view of the sunset from the golf course. The sun was peeking through between trees. Lily and Adrian followed me and took some gorgeous silhouettes. Is it just me or are photographs like this extra magical??
To finish off our session, we headed back down to the Kenneth Hahn Lower Park where there is a lake. We found a wooden bridge and set up shop here. Because the sun had mostly set now, the sky was littered with pink, red, and purple clouds. This made all of their photographs look absolutely magical. Because it was still winter (at least for LA) it was fairly cold. As any smart couple would, Lily and Adrian huddled together for warmth. Adrian lifted Lily up onto the bridge and they looked at each other with adoration in their eyes. You can’t tell me they are not absolutely adorable.
Kenneth Hahn Lower Park is fairly busy, but it is so massive that it is not hard to find a gorgeous, secluded spot. And it is an amazing spot for engagement or couples’ photography sessions because of the variety in backdrops built into the single location. We did not use them in this session, but around the lake are cute benches that can be integrated into your couples’ session. If given the opportunity, I would love to do another couples’ session at Kenneth Hahn Lower Park!!

For Gen and Isacu2019s Valentine session I paired a handmade heart backdrop with plenty of easy prompts, and the result is exactly what a Valentine shoot should feel like: warm, a little silly and full of real affection rather than stiff poses.
Once the Valentine’s Day heart was completed (you can read about that whole ordeal here), I immediately thought of Gen and Isac as the perfect couple for this backdrop. We did our Valentine photography session right after the heavy rainfall in Los Angeles, so we were unable to do an outdoor shoot with the heart like I did with Amanda and Kevin, so indoors we were. Honestly, this valentine’s’ photography backdrop is super versatile, and its cozy aesthetic works perfectly indoors.
Just like any session with me, for my valentine photography sessions we started out with some super basic posing with simple prompts. My favorite thing to do with couples is give loose prompts that you can mold to fit your dynamic perfectly. So, we started off with Gen sitting between Isac’s legs and mixed it up with them looking at each other, kissing each other’s cheeks, relaxing, and getting comfortable in front of the camera. These were adorable.
My favorite moment during their session was when I told them to roll together along the blanket. Essentially, Gen started on top of Isac and then they rolled. It sounds super challenging, but the photos turned out so cute because they were both laughing the whole time. It definitely is no the most comfortable pose but the before, during, and after are all winners, so just like the old-timey quote says “beauty is pain.”
Another one of my favorites that I started doing with Eileen and Steven is having couples close their eyes, lean as far back as they can, and then try and kiss without opening their eyes. This always leads to some funny moments where you kiss each other’s noses or cheeks or sometimes you are so in sync that you actually do kiss. The photographs that came from this pose are definitely some of my favorite from their session.
In my mind this backdrop emulates a young adult romance novel. So, I had to have them lie in opposite directions on the blanket and look at each other. It was so cute and definitely a YA moment. They are ready for the book cover deal. Calling all Penguin Random House representatives, it’s time to get the deal ready. Gen and Isac were so much fun to work with and always went along with all my weird ideas. They even play fought for me, which was so cute, mostly because they were laughing and smiling the whole time.
This was the first valentine photography session I did with my new set. I had so much fun messing around with angles and poses. Exploring different ways my backdrop can be incorporated into sessions is one of my favorite aspects of a new set. There are and were just oh so many options and I could never run out of prompts and ideas. Creating this masterpiece was so inspiring. Seeing the idea that started as a seed in my brain come to fruition was a heady feeling. I am excited to see what backdrops I come up with for future celebrations. I am particularly excited for pride!!
So if you are thinking of doing a studio or a valentine photography session and are hesitating, leap, do it. Create some good as memories, laugh a lot, and walk away with adorable photographs just like Gen and Isac. This is the behind-the-scenes story of how I built my Valentine love backdrop by hand, including the doubts, the trial and error, and the small victories along the way, for anyone curious about the work behind a themed photography set.
I remember growing up thinking ugh Valentine’s Day is so overrated…why do you need such a conspicuous display of your love? But now as an adult, I think about how fun and playful Valentine’s day can be, a chance to take time for each other and yourself. I wanted it to encapsulate all types of love (self-love and romantic). Essentially be the Love Backdrop. SO beautiful in our frantic world!
Love should be celebrated; it is a joy. And, let’s be honest, life gets busy and sometimes you don’t have time to just sit down and tell your partner how much you adore them.
So, when I started creating my Valentine’s Day Love backdrop, I wanted it to reflect the beauty and imperfect nature of love. If you ask me that is what makes it special. Set it Up, a cheesy rom com on Netflix said, “I love you not because of but in spite of.”
One of my many crafty interests is crocheting. Now, I only learnt how to crochet from a friend and the first coaster I ever made took multiple hours. So, crocheting 16 feet of wire in the shape of a heart was a massive undertaking. My original idea was creating a massive heart that could stand in a flowerpot weighed down by sand. Then a picnic blanket with body pillows, chocolate, and roses would be in front. Perfectly setting the stage for an intimate photography session. But there were complications upon complications which led it to the final results that I personally am in love with. I can’t wait to put the Valentine’s Day backdrop to use for other celebrations, like pride.
Step 1: Creating a heart sculpture out of wire.
This is the most important part of the love backdrop!
I have never worked with wire before, so I did not know where to start. I knew I needed thicker wire to make sure it could support the yarn and would be visible behind the picnic blanket. What I did not know was that its sturdiness is not solely dependent on thickness but also gauge. And I did not realize that I would be unable to create a point without any wire tools.
I got out my roll of wire on the floor and realized I had no way to hold down the ends to shape it. This wire is massive, and my friends were occupied with their own jobs, so I was on my own. The heaviest piece of furniture in my house is a couch. The problem here is that the couch legs are wood, which is soft and could be cut by the wire. As any problem-solver would, I came up with a solution, sponges. I got out two handy dandy sponges and placed the wire in-between and then placed this underneath the couch leg. Finally, I could get to work.
At first it looked like a massive blob.
After about an hour it resembled a heart. Because I couldn’t create a point, with the help of my bestie YuYu, we decided the best look would be a cartoon heart (wide with a shallow dip). The biggest challenge was getting rid of the small kinks and getting each side to mirror each other. The heart is so big that it was impossible to see the entire heart from the ground. The only way was from an elevated vantage point, aka jumping up on the couch and going on your tiptoes.
Even at this stage of building the love backdrop i was nervous. Part of me was ready to give up already, but the bigger part was excited and couldn’t wait to create something beautiful and powerful.
Step 2: Acquire yarn and create a yarn chain long enough to go around the heart’s perimeter.
This task was easy, well minus the getting yarn. I wanted red yarn for the lace edging but the only weight at Joann’s was too thick. So I settled for cream yarn. (now I am glad for this challenge). Because the yarn is cream rather than white, it allows uses for the backdrop to be diversified. Transforming my vision into a love backdrop rather than a backdrop exclusively for Valentine’s Day. I sat down on the couch and an hour later had a chain with probably at least a thousand of chains. A chain is the basic stitch in crocheting that you build upon. I made the chain a tad longer than necessary in case there was any shrinkage once I attached it around the heart, which ultimately was needed.
Step 3: Begin crocheting the love backdrop’s heart
Crochet three rows of single crochets. Then attach the yarn to the wire with a fourth round of single crochets
This is pretty straightforward, just time intensive. For the wire I procured, three rounds was just enough to cover outside completely. The fourth round of single crochets took longer because they were done around the wire . This attaches it to the yarn and builds a layer of chains to add the pattern to!
Row 1 and 2: chain 5, skip two , double crochet (dc), chain (ch) 2, dc, ch2, & repeat until you have made it around. At the end, because mine was a heart, I did a slip stitch at the end to form a complete loop.
Row 3: repeat the pattern for row 1 until you have 5 spaces then in the 6th, 6 dc, ch 10, flip over the yarn and slip stitch (sl st) into dc #1, then ch2 and sl st into the next dc (which should be the fifth), then flip it back over and put 4 dc into the big loop you created.
Then you ch 17, count down 9 and sl st, flip over the ring you created, ch3, 3 dc, ch 3, 1 sc and repeat until you have 4 petals, for the first petal in each flower once you have completed your 3 dc you either attach it to the last flower you completed at the 3 dc or you count out 5 of the spaces and attach it to row 2 with a sl st and then continue chaining 3. then ch 10 and sl to the fourth dc you put in the big ring.
Repeat until you have six flowers around the ring. Then 4 dc, ch 2, skip one space and dc into the dc. Then you repeat until you have 5 more spaces, attach the sixth flower to this spot through a sl st and then repeat this pattern until you’ve gone the whole way around.
This pattern sounds super complicated and it definitely is not easy. With that being said once you get the hang of it, it goes much more quickly. I think my first one took me over an hour and by the end they only took about 30 minutes. And if what I wrote made no sense, the YouTube video is easier to follow!
Step 5: Reshape the whole heart.
The focal element of the love backdrop is the heart. So of course when it was destroyed in the process of crocheting around it, I was stressed. But I was able to reshape it with the help of my sturdy friend, the couch.
Step 6: Block the heart.
If you are not a crocheter that means absolutely nothing to you. To be honest I had never blocked any of my past crochet projects either. All this entails is lightly wetting the yarn with a spray bottle. Then you use thumbtacks to pin it in place where you want it to sit.
Step 7: Moving the love backdrop’s heart to stand vertically.
Well this is where the next major problem arose. Turns out the yarn weighed too much so the heart shape collapsed and suddenly I had a massive blob with a delicate yarn edging. I had already purchased a white flowerpot from Home Depot and bought a whole 0.5 cubic foot of deconstructed granite and a 5 lb bag of aquarium gravel for the top (because it is prettier) and when I tried to stand it up in it, it simply collapsed. So back to the thinking board.
My three options were either, give up (not in my DNA), buy a sturdier wire wrap it in yarn and hot glue them together, or get a trellis to secure it to. A wire reinforcement could have worked, but there was no guarantee that would be too heavy and still collapse, so a trellis it is.
Well, it turns out most are only two feet wide, and lots are shorter than the 4-5 feet I needed. Luckily I found an expandable trellis that was a little wider. When it arrived, I set down a massive sheet of cardboard to reshape the heart on and used a heavy flowerpot outside to hold the end in place. Then I placed the trellis on top of it and using the 120 cable ties I procured, started to secure the Valentine’s Day heart in place. I was rushing to beat the sunlight, so I could place it in the garage safely before the torrential three-day downpour began.
Thankfully this worked and the trellis was strong enough to support the heart.
SUCCESS
Step 8: Take Sample photos.
The rain destroyed any hope at taking sample Valentine’s Day photographs outdoors, so an at-home studio session was in order. Thankfully I already had a photography stand (most of my photography is outdoor). Although, I had yet to use it, so I did not have anything to put behind it as a solid background, but my quick research showed that king sized flat sheets were large enough to solve my conundrum. So, I was able to set up an indoor session with the help of my friends, Gen and Isac. Because it was an indoor session, my friend Michelle helped me weave fairy lights through the outside of the lace edging, adding an air of magic and love!
In the end, I love the Valentine’s day backdrop I built and think it is so versatile. Truly as the project continued, it became a love backdrop rather than a Valentine’s Day backdrop. It symbolizes love, dedication, care and passion, and at least personally perseverance through barriers and challenges along the way. I can’t wait to think of ways to spice it up with small flowers or rainbow flowers
