  • How to Plan the Perfect Proposal – A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Plan the Perfect Proposal – A Step-by-Step Guide

To plan the perfect proposal, start with what feels meaningful to you both, then work through the details step by step: choose a location and time with good light, plan whether it is a surprise, arrange a photographer, and prepare a few heartfelt words. This guide walks you through each step.

So, how exactly do you propose. Let’s jump right in!

So, you’re getting ready to pop the big question…will you marry me?

Planning your proposal can be daunting. Proposing to your partner is a big deal and is a significant step in any relationship, but I am here to help you. I have compiled a list of important factors to make your proposal process stress-free.

Understand Your Partner’s Expectations and Desires When it Comes to your Proposal

    Communication Matters

Start by having some real heart-to-heart conversations about your future together. Find out if marriage is what your partner wants and what they envision for both your engagement and wedding.

    Pay Attention

Keep your eyes and ears open for any hints your partner might drop about their dream proposal. I recommend keeping a private word document or a note to compile each tip on. These clues are golden!

Choosing the Right Setting and Timing for your Proposal

    Finding the Perfect Spot

Think about places that hold sentimental meaning to both of you. It could be where you first met, where you went on your first date, where you first told them you loved them, where you established your relationship, or anywhere that holds special value and meaning to you.

Timing Is Everything When Planning your Proposal

I would consider whether there are significant dates or events that can add to the magic of your proposal. On the day itself, either stick to the plan you’ve formulated or go with instinct. Choosing a moment where you both feel relaxed and happy will make it that much more special.

Selecting the Ideal Ring for your Proposal

    Investigate Ring Preferences

Before you get engaged and pick out a ring, talk about their style and preferences in jewelry, do they like antique styles, modern styles, and importantly what is their ring size. Before going to a jeweler, observe the styles that are currently in their jewelry collection. If you want more information, here is a Vogue article about mistakes to avoid when purchasing a ring for your proposal!

    Budget and Sizing

Before you go to the jeweler, determine a range of how much you want to spend on your engagement ring and make sure the ring you select is within that range. Additionally, before you go, make sure you know your partner’s ring size!

    Creating a Personal Proposal

    Adding Your Personal Touch

Your proposal should be personal and unique to your relationship. Do not copy a speech that is online. Pull from significant memories and moments that have shed light on why your partner is so important to you. Your proposal should reflect the depth of your connection and your journey together.

    Speak from the Heart

When you plan out your speech, don’t write a precise script. Write down which moments you want to mention and what attributes draw you to them and make them so special. Tell them exactly why you want to spend the rest of your life with them.

Involving Loved Ones and Capturing the Moment

    Bringing in the Crew

If your partner wants a big engagement or would love for their family to be a part of their special moment, consider inviting them. And last but not least, don’t forget to hire a photographer to capture the special moment!

    Keep Calm and Confident

Nerves are absolutely normal but trust your relationship and the time and energy you’ve invested in building your partnership. So, take a deep breath and let your love and adoration shine through.

After the Proposal: Celebrate and Plan Ahead

    Time to Celebrate

After your partner says yes, plan something special to celebrate the moment together! This could be anything from a simple dinner to a grand celebration or party with friends and family. Regardless of what it is, celebrate that moment in a unique way to both of you.

    Reflect and Dream

Take some time to talk about your married future together. Reflect on the milestone and get excited about what lies ahead.

    To Conclude

Proposing can be nerve-wracking but is also incredibly beautiful. And it definitely doesn’t have to be daunting. Remember that by following these steps and considering your partner’s wishes, you’ll create a proposal that’s uniquely your own. Lastly, trust all of the work and love that exists in your relationship.

Brand Park with its Expansive Greenery and Beautiful Architecture is Perfect for Memorable Engagement Photos

Brand Park in Glendale is a memorable engagement photography spot because it combines sweeping green lawns with the striking Moorish-style architecture of the Brand Library, giving you both natural and dramatic backdrops for playful, intimate photos in one location.

So you are planning your engagement session and want some gorgeous, playful, and intimate photographs, but you do not know where to go. Well, Brand Park is a gorgeous park with expansive greenery and beautiful architecture

    Brand Park History

I was surprised to learn that Brand Park and Library used to be Leslie Brand’s home. It was originally designed to have tennis courts, a pool, horses, gardens, and a greenhouse. Sadly in 1924, Brand was diagnosed with terminal cancer, eventually became bedridden. He decided he wanted to donate his land and property to the city of Glendale to be used as a Public Library and Park.

The architecture of the Library is phenomenal. The design of the Brand was based upon The East Indian Pavilion. This was featured in the Chicago World Fair of 1893, drawing inspiration from East India and arabesque patterns. The inspiration is apparent, especially in its beautiful archways.

Brand Park is also home to a Japanese Friendship Garden and the Shoseian Teahouse. The Japanese Friendship Garden is adorned with vibrant foliage, elegant ponds, and serene paths, this garden emanates a serene ambiance, creating yet another amazing spot at Brand Park which would be perfect for capturing the essence of your relationship.

Brand Park both gorgeous outdoor greenery and the library has beautiful architecture including a stairway leading up the library. The park is home to a baseball field, a hill on which the library sits, and green grass. Parts of the park have picnic benches and grills to bake on. Lastly there is a playground.

My personal favorite spot for photographs is in the grassy hill leading up to the Library. The expansive green areas of the park, and up against the beautiful trees. I took my branding photos up against some of the trees in Brand Park, and I do not think I could have chosen a prettier place. In my engagement photography sessions, I love using the hill to create really playful photographs of you chasing each other down the hill or rolling down the hill together.

This is a very popular destination. So, if you want to have your couples or engagement session here, I recommend doing a weekday evening session, to circumvent this problem.

Between the 1930s and 1960’s Old Town Pasadena went through a stint of neglect and began to deteriorate. In 1983, it was declared a historic district. Since then, Old Pasadena has been revamped: buildings were repainted and new investors transformed the struggling Old Pasadena, into a new and improved beautiful destination. Currently, Old Town is home to restaurants, cafes, nightlife, shops, hotels, bars, movie theaters, and a shopping mall.

Old Town Pasadena has a rustic feel with gorgeous buildings.

It’s time for a little history lesson. So, when Old Town was reconstructed by city designers, they wanted it to reflect the style present between 1925 and 1940. As a result the color palate and building design of Old Town Pas is representative of that time period. So, in your engagement photos, you can expect this to give your photographs an old-film aesthetic that I love.

Old Pas is home to numerous restaurants that have warm, intimate ambiances with outdoor seating, perfect for engagement sessions. While this Old Town is stunning, it does get busy around sunset, so a sunrise engagement session is optimal.

If you do a sunrise engagement session, there are numerous cafes with delicious coffee and pastries that you can treat yourself to.

And if you do a sunset engagement session, there is no shortage of scrumptious dinner options.

Or if you want a midday engagement session, you can go on a stroll and enjoy quieter streets, catch a movie, and get some lunch.

Either way, you get to enjoy beautiful Old Town Pasadena and support local businesses.

Grand Central Market | Angels Flight Railway | Downtown | Los Angeles, California

Grand Central Market and the neighboring Angels Flight Railway are two of my favorite Downtown Los Angeles engagement spots because together they offer vibrant market color, vintage signage and the historic funicular, giving your session energy, character and a real sense of the city.

View of downtown Los Angeles from Angels Flight Railway which is across from Grand Central Market

Los Angeles is full of beautiful locations for your engagement session. Two of my favorites are Grand Central Market and Angels Flight Railway and Plaza. These are right across the street from each other in Downtown Los Angeles, which is why they’re going into the same blog post.

    Grand Central Market’s History

Grand Central Market, founded in 1917, is a staple of Los Angeles and has a fascinating history. Initially, Grand Central Market was a small open-air market serving a wide array of communities in downtown Los Angeles. Since then, it has transformed into a bustling indoor marketplace, showcasing diverse cuisines and cultures. Grand Central reflects Los Angeles’ cultural diversity and how it has evolved over time. It has been a melting pot, embracing immigrants, local food artisans, and multiple generations of Angelenos.

The Market attracts both locals and tourists who want an authentic taste of the city’s vibrant culinary offerings. Grand Central Market is a prime example of Los Angeles’ diversity and resilience. Regardless of if you are visiting Los Angeles or live here, Grand Central Market needs to be on your bucket list.

The History of Angels Flight Railway:

Angels Flight Railway in downtown Los Angeles is a beautiful historic landmark

Located across the street from Grand Central Market, the Angels Flight Railway, built in 1901, has an interesting history. Initially, the Railway was used to take residents up and down Bunker Hill. If you have ever been, you know that this Railway is extremely short. So short it is often referred to as the “Shortest Railway in the World.” The Angels Flight Railway is distinctive with orange cars taking passengers between Hill Street and Grand Avenue. This railway is an iconic symbol of Los Angeles having witnessed cultural and urban transformations over the last century.

The Angels Flight Railway now holds nostalgia for Los Angeles locals. It has undergone numerous restoration efforts, ultimately, preserving its historic charm.

The atmosphere inside Grand Central Market make it an amazing choice for your engagement session. The busy marketplace creates a lively backdrop, filling your engagement photographs with energy and excitement.  Grand Central Market manages to capture a blend of old-fashioned charm and modernity. The historic buildings surrounding the market and the vintage signs result in a urban feel.

Similar to an engagement session at a coffee shop, the expansive culinary offerings at Grand Central Market add another opportunity for unique engagement photographs. Imagine sharing a delicious ice-cream or scrumptious meal, feeding each other, goofing around and creating a special memory.

With its bustling energy, diverse backdrop options and a chance to build more memories during your playful engagement session, the Grand Market provides a vibrant and unforgettable setting for your engagement photography session in Los Angeles.

    Angels Flight Railway & Plaza

beautiful arches lined with vines near Angels Flight Railway in Los Angeles

Right next door to Grand Central Market, Angels Flight Plaza can be incorporated into your engagement session for diverse aesthetics. The vintage vibe of the plaza itself, makes it standout as an engagement photography location.

In the Angels Flight Plaza there are unique arches lined with vines that are gorgeous, a concrete stairway, and expansive views that make this a perfect engagement photography session location. Not to mention the views of downtown Los Angeles are absolutely stunning. The dichotomy between its historic feel and the modern feel of downtown Los Angeles lends itself to unique engagement photographs. The plaza has lots of room to move around freely, allowing us to capture natural and intimate moments during your engagement session.

    To Conclude:

You cannot go wrong doing your engagement session at either Grand Central Market or Angels Flight Railway & Plaza. There are so many backdrop options within walking distance, we could take your engagement photographs for hours and never get bored. Both will give you stunning engagement photographs that encapsulate your relationship, the love and joy between you and your partner, and each intimate moment.

Malaga Cove Plaza and Library History:

Malaga Cove Plaza and Library, built in 1925, is in the Palos Verdes Estate. The Library was developed in the 1920s by a renowned architect, Mryon Hunt. As an architect he primarily designed buildings in Southern California and Evanston, Illinois. In Southern California, he also notably designed buildings on Occidental College’s campus, The Huntington Library and Gardens, The Langham, and the Hollywood Bowl. It has elements of Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Renaissance architecture. The library itself is emblematic of classic beauty with its red-ribbon tile roof, its intricate detail-work, and its archways.

The Neptune Fountain, added in 1930, is a replica, made of white Carrara marble, about 2/3 in size of the 16th century fountain in Bologna, Italy. The fountain is ornate and contains sea monsters, spitting dolphins, and a naked Neptune.
