Valentineu2019s Day is celebrated in wonderfully different ways around the world, from anonymous pressed-flower cards in Denmark to women gifting chocolate in Japan and friendship-focused celebrations in Finland; here is a tour of the most charming traditions.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in unique ways across the world. So, this week I thought it would be cool to look at all of the different Valentine’s Day Traditions across the world!

The United States

Here, In the United States, Valentine’s Day is synonymous with romantic gestures of all sizes, gifts, and outward expressions of love. Typically couples exchange chocolates, flowers, and heartfelt cards. Most restaurants and entertainment businesses offer special deals for romantic dinners and activities. Other businesses host special events, such as a Latte making class. School-aged children also spend het day exchanging valentines and candies with their classmates. Current celebrations are shifting towards more creative and homemade gift ideas, such as personalized items, experiences, and weekend getaways.

Europe

The United Kingdom

In the UK, Valentine’s Day is a dedicated time for those in relationships to express their affection and love through gestures such as cards, flowers, and romantic gestures. Similar to the U.S. lots of restaurants have Valentine’s Day menus that showcase yummy dishes and high-brow wines.

France

In France, often thought of as the epicenter of romance, Valentine’s Day is a massive celebration. Those in relationships, exchange cartes d’amour (love letters) and often eat at a candlelit restaurant, whether it is a quaint bistro or a Michelin-starred restaurant. The city of Paris, aka the city of love, with its iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral, becomes even more magical on Valentine’s Day, drawing couples from all over the world.

Germany

In Germany, Valentine’s Day is called Valentinswoche, which is a week-long celebration preceding Valentine’s Day, February 14^th. Throughout this week, couples exchange small gifts symbolizing their love and appreciation for their partner. All of these gifts demonstrate their love through thoughtful gestures and acts of service, solidify couples’ love for each other.

Italy

Italy is a country known for its romantic flair. Common Valentine’s activities include going on romantic gondola rides along the canal, enjoying gelato, and visiting iconic landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and the Ponte Vecchio. One of Italy’s most popular Valentine’s Day traditions involves “Baci Perugina,” a chocolate-covered hazelnut. This is kind of like a chocolate version of a fortune cookie. Inside the chocolate-covered hazelnuts is a love-letter/note. These little notes are typically romantic messages or quotes about love. If you ask me, these sound absolutely delicious, who doesn’t love chocolate covered hazelnuts??

Wales

Wales has a unique Valentine’s Day tradition. In Wales couples exchange intricately carved wooden spoons, known as Lovespoons. These spoons are often carved with symbols such as hearts, keys and locks, which represent one’s love and commitment to each other. Historically, a young man would spend hours carving elaborate Lovespoons and offer it to his partner and hope they would accept it.

Estonia

Estonia views Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love and friendship. Actually, it commonly refers to Valentine’s Day as Friend’s Day, encouraging everyone to show appreciation for their friends and loved ones. Personally, I am in complete agreement with Estonia, and agree that Valentine’s Day should emphasize the importance of all relationships not just romantic relationships.

Asia

Philippines

This is one of the coolest, most unique Valentine’s Day traditions around the world if you ask me. In the Philippines, Valentine’s Day is a popular day for couples to get married during mass wedding ceremonies. In these ceremonies, couples who might not be able to afford a traditional wedding are able to celebrate their love in a meaningful way. The mass weddings are often sponsored by the local government, non-profit organizations, or private institutions. This removes the financial barrier and allows everyone to celebrate their love together, bringing the community together.

South Korea

South Korea has two holidays directly tied to Valentine’s Day. On their Valentine’s Day, women gift men chocolates. One month after is White Day on which men reciprocate the gesture and give their women gifts often including chocolates, flowers, or any other token of appreciation. Then, one month later on April 14^th is Black Day. This is a holiday dedicated to single people, who gather and eat Jajangmyeon, which is a black bean paste noodle dish.

Japan

In Japan, the main form of celebrating Valentine’s Day is women gifting chocolates to men. There are two different types of chocolate that get gifted. The first is for romantic partners or where romantic feelings are present, honmei-choco. The second is for friends, colleagues and family members giri-choco, which are chocolates gifted out of appreciation or politeness.

China

The Chinese equivalent of Valentine’s Day is the Qixi Festival. This is celebrated on the seventh ay of the seventh lunar month, which is August 10, 2024. This festival is based upon the annual meeting of Zhinü and Niulang in Chinese mythology. To celebrate, couples often exchange gifts, go on elaborate romantic dates, and express their love for one another.

India

Valentine’s Day is not typically celebrated in Indian culture, although amongst younger generations it is picking up popularity. Some couples embrace the holiday as a means to show their love and affection for their partner.

Thailand

In Thailand, Valentine’s Day coincides with Makha Bucha, commemorating the day when 1250 monks spontaneously gathered to hear Buddha preach. This holiday is celebrated by releasing lanterns into the sky or floating candles down the river to symbolize love and good fortune.

Latin America

Brazil

In Brazil, Valentine’s Day is known as Dia dos Namorados, which translates to Lovers’ Day. This celebration does not take place on February 14^th but rather on June 12^th. For Día dos Namorados, couples spend the day together and exchange chocolates, flowers, and other meaningful gifts. Additionally, the houses and streets are decorated. This holiday is not just for those in relationships. In Brazil, if you are single there are many rituals you can perform, here are three:
1. For more passion: you mix a glass of water and coffee powder and leave it untouched for three days and dispose of it on the fourth day.
2. If you want to forget old love you place two sprigs of fennel in a glass with water and leave it alone for 3 days after which you empty it into your garden of a flowerpot.
3. If you want to get rid of envious feelings towards those in relationships, you add coarse salt and brown sugar to a full water bottle and after the third day you empty the water in the shape of a cross in front of your house.

Mexico

In Mexico, Valentine’s Day is known as El Día del Amor y la Amistad, which translates to The Day of Love and Friendship. Like Estonia, in Mexico, El Día del Amor y la Amistad is a celebration of both romantic and platonic love. People exchange gifts, flowers, and cards with loved ones, and restaurants have special offers and manus. In some communities, there are parades, concerts, and other public events to mark the occasion.

Argentina

In Argentina, Valentine’s Day is celebrated as part of Semana de la Dulzura, which translates to sweetness week. During this week, which typically takes place in July, people exchange candies, chocolates, and other treats with their loved ones. This week is used to show your appreciation for friends, family and romantic partners.

Colombia

Columbia celebrates El Día del Amor y la Amistad. A day to celebrate your love and appreciation for all of you friends, family, and romantic partners. Columbian cities are adorned with heart-shaped decorations. Often there are other concerts, festivals, or events to celebrate El Día del Amor y Amistad.

Peru

In Peru, Valentine’s Day is known as El Día del Amor, which directly translates to Day of Love. On this day, couples celebrate their love with romantic gestures of varying sizes, such as exchanging gifts and dining out. And cities are decorated with flowers and heart-shaped balloons, generating an overall excitement and enthusiasm for the El Día del Amor

South Africa

In South Africa, couples often spend Valentine’s Day going on romantic adventures, like going on a picnic or having dinner at a classy restaurant. Some people even go on hot balloon rides or on wine tasting tours in the Cape Winelands.

Nigeria

In Nigeria, Valentine’s Day is celebrated through music, dance, and poetry. Lots of people gather at parties, concerts, and cultural events to show their love and appreciation through song, dance, and spoken performances.

Ghana

In Ghana, Valentine’s Day is known as Red and White Day. On this day, people dress in red and white and exchange gifts and cards. Many schools and workplaces host special events and activities to celebrate Red and White day, creating a festive atmosphere surrounding the holiday.

Kenya

In Kenya, the Maasai community celebrates their love on Valentine’s day through the exchange of traditional gifts, such as beaded jewelry and clothing with intricate patterns and symbols. Traditional ceremonies and rituals can take place on Valentine’s Day that bless newlywed couples and reaffirm love and commitment within the community.

Egypt

In Egypt, Valentine’s Day is commonly celebrated with a romantic cruise along the Nile River. On the cruise, couples get to enjoy the spectacular views of ancient temples and monuments. As well as consume delicious food and watch live entertainment.

To Conclude

There are so many different Valentine’s Day traditions around the world. While writing this blog post, I loved seeing the similarities in how Valentine’s Day is celebrated across the world, but also the differentiations. I personally, think that Valentine’s Day should be used to celebrate all forms of love, platonic and romantic, and so it was really cool seeing that South Korea has its own holiday specifically for friendships. And I thought that Wales’s tradition of Lovespoons was really cool and far more meaningful than buying cheap flowers and stuffed animals. And the Phillippines’s tradition of mass weddings is something I never knew about, but an brilliant idea that truly brings the community together.

The way we celebrate Valentine’s Day around the world will continue to evolve as the digital era continues, but it is super valuable to take a step back and appreciate who is around you in a meaningful way. And hey, the digital world means that now you are able to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your family, friends, and romantic partners even if you are not physically in the same state.

If you want to celebrate Valentineu2019s Day differently this year, you have plenty of options, from cozy at-home date nights and creative DIY gifts to outdoor adventures and mini getaways; below are thirty-three unique ideas to make the day your own.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to your love and your love alone. So, celebrating valentine’s day with a unique idea makes it significantly more meaningful, allowing you to show your appreciation and dedication to your partner. It is easy to buy chocolates and flowers, fewer people spend time planning an activity that will form core memories and further deepen your connection. So, here are 32 unique Valentine’s Day ideas for you to execute, some are simple and some are more time intensive.
1. Create a scavenger hunt: Your scavenger hunt can be based on a hobby of theirs, or their favorite movie, or meaningful locations to your relationship. Honestly, there are an infinite number of ways to make a scavenger hunt, but make sure it is tailored to your partner. If you are crafting it to be significant locations to your relationship you can include places like where you had your first date or first met or told each other “I love you.”
2. DIY wine or chocolate tasting at home: Rather than just getting a box full of chocolates and gifting them to your partner, you could get an assortment of wines and chocolates and set up an at-home tasting station. You can take turns sampling each chocolate and wine. Once you’ve tried each one you can make separate lists of your favorite flavors and pairings and compare.
3. Write love letters and read them aloud: what could be more romantic than reading a heartfelt love letter to your partner and vice versa. You can read them to each other over dinner or cozied up on the couch. You could even write them together at a park. But make sure you sit down and think about what you want to say to your partner and tell them all the reasons your life is better with them in it. And you walk away with a keepsake for moments where you might want reassurance but can’t be physically near your partner.
4. Plan a surprise picnic: As a park enthusiast, a picnic is always going to be on my list. To make this extra romantic, you can pack a basket with your partner’s favorite snacks, drinks, and activities. You could bring mini canvases to paint together, or books if they’re an avid reader, or frisbee disks if they would enjoy that. I recommend choosing a picturesque scenic spot where you can relax and enjoy each other’s company.
5. Couples cooking class: Cooking with other people can be stressful, but a cooking class is always a good time. Especially, since someone else is guiding you through the process, so you are almost guaranteed a delicious meal. You can branch out with a cooking class and learn to cook a new recipe or learn new culinary techniques.
6. Latte Art Class: If this is not a unique valentine’s day idea, I don’t know what is. But I don’t know if you have ever tried making coffee well foam art, but it is challenging as f***. So, why not try something new this Valentine’s Day. And hey, some of the most fun adventures are doing things that you suck at, as long as you can laugh at yourself. If you are located near Redondo Beach, Klatch Coffee is hosting a latte art class.
7. Movie marathon: If your partner loves movies like I do, selecting a lineup of some of their favorite movies or romantic movies to watch together is a wonderful way to spend your valentine’s day. With a line-up in hand, you can make it even cozier with blankets, pillows, and delicious snacks.
8. Couples massage or spa day: Given that Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, this idea will work better on the weekend preceding Valentine’s Day or the weekend after. You can treat yourselves to a day of relaxation and pampering at the spa. You could do couples massages, or facials, hot tub soaks, or anything else your local spa offers.
9. Memory jar: As a super sentimental person, this one is a winner in my eyes. You could start a tradition of creating a memory jar. This jar will be filled with notes containing your favorite shared moments, inside jokes, and really any special memories you want to preserve. This tradition can continue on throughout the year and a near jar could be started each Valentine’s Day.
10. Sunset hike and stargazing: If you and your partner enjoy hiking or stargazing, you could go on a scenic hike to a lookout or mountaintop and watch the sunset. I would personally bring along a blanket, so you have somewhere to lie down and watch the starry sky! If you both are not big on hiking, then you could a drivable viewpoint in Los Angeles and bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy while you watch the sunset and magical night.
11. Homemade chocolates or treats: If you enjoy cooking together, you could find a recipe for homemade chocolates, truffles, or another one of your favorite sweets. You could try different flavor combinations or have fun making traditional delicious chocolates together
12. Virtual date night: this one is for my long-distance couples. If for whatever reason you are unable to spend Valentine’s Day together in-person, you can plan a virtual date night on facetime or Zoom. Now, instead of simply calling you can play games together, watch a movie simultaneously, cook the same recipe together, or draw or paint together.
13. Love song or poem: If you love putting your thoughts into writing, you could write and perform a love song or poem for your partner. This is a super creative, unique way to express your feelings of gratitude and love to your partner. If you are trying to up the romantic, you can set up some candles or sit by a fireplace (if you have one).
14. Scenic drive: If you love driving, you could take a leisurely drive together and enjoy the beautiful views and the journey. You can stop along the way to explore cute towns you pass through or stunning landscapes. A scenic drive will allow you to enjoy each others company.
15. Themed dinner night: If you are really into trying new cuisines or learning about different cultures, you could have a themed dinner. You can research traditional dishes and decorations and go on an adventure together. Or you can predesign your own Mad Lib and write out your love story emitting random nouns, Proper nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Then on Valentine’s Day you can have your partner fill in the missing words and laugh at the story it tells. If you write a proper love story together, you can incorporate your senses of humor and adventure and the ways you care for each other. You can alternate choosing plot twists and motifs to include. With so many options, choosing a romantic restaurant in Los Angeles can feel overwhelming, so here are five favorites that reliably set the mood for a date night or proposal dinner, each with a little about the atmosphere and what makes it special.

There are so many romantic restaurants in Los Angeles, making it can be challenging to know where to go. So, here are five excellent romantic restaurants in Los Angeles: République, Perch, The Little Door, Il Cielo, & Mélisse. Each of these romantic restaurants will create a dreamy date and might be the perfect spot to propose.

1. République

Located in Los Angeles, République is a delicious French-inspired restaurant. République is in a restored 1920s building with high ceilings and ornate architecture. The dining area is spacious and masterfully combines its history and a modern style.

As soon as you enter République, you’re met with a bustling and warm atmosphere that draws you in. The staff are amazing at République, and have outstanding knowledge and are able to answer any questions you might have. Brand Park with its Expansive Greenery and Beautiful Architecture is Perfect for Memorable Engagement Photos

Brand Park in Glendale is a memorable engagement photography spot because it combines sweeping green lawns with the striking Moorish-style architecture of the Brand Library, giving you both natural and dramatic backdrops for playful, intimate photos in one location.

So you are planning your engagement session and want some gorgeous, playful, and intimate photographs, but you do not know where to go. Well, Brand Park is a gorgeous park with expansive greenery and beautiful architecture

Brand Park History

I was surprised to learn that Brand Park and Library used to be Leslie Brand’s home. It was originally designed to have tennis courts, a pool, horses, gardens, and a greenhouse. Sadly in 1924, Brand was diagnosed with terminal cancer, eventually became bedridden. He decided he wanted to donate his land and property to the city of Glendale to be used as a Public Library and Park.

The architecture of the Library is phenomenal. The design of the Brand was based upon The East Indian Pavilion. This was featured in the Chicago World Fair of 1893, drawing inspiration from East India and arabesque patterns. The inspiration is apparent, especially in its beautiful archways.

Brand Park is also home to a Japanese Friendship Garden and the Shoseian Teahouse. The Japanese Friendship Garden is adorned with vibrant foliage, elegant ponds, and serene paths, this garden emanates a serene ambiance, creating yet another amazing spot at Brand Park which would be perfect for capturing the essence of your relationship.

A permit is not required for outdoor photography sessions, but if you want to use an event space or photograph inside the Brand Park Library, a permit is required. Brand Park also has free parking and typically there is plenty.

Brand Park both gorgeous outdoor greenery and the library has beautiful architecture including a stairway leading up the library. The park is home to a baseball field, a hill on which the library sits, and green grass. Parts of the park have picnic benches and grills to bake on. Lastly there is a playground.

My personal favorite spot for photographs is in the grassy hill leading up to the Library. The expansive green areas of the park, and up against the beautiful trees. I took my branding photos up against some of the trees in Brand Park, and I do not think I could have chosen a prettier place. In my engagement photography sessions, I love using the hill to create really playful photographs of you chasing each other down the hill or rolling down the hill together.

This is a very popular destination. So, if you want to have your couples or engagement session here, I recommend doing a weekday evening session, to circumvent this problem.

The architecture is Mediterranean Revival with intentionally congruous buildings around a central plaza fountain, making it absolutely stunning. Your engagement photographs will be timeless and quaint.

Malaga Cove Plaza and Library, built in 1925, is in the Palos Verdes Estate. The Library was developed in the 1920s by a renowned architect, Mryon Hunt. As an architect he primarily designed buildings in Southern California and Evanston, Illinois. In Southern California, he also notably designed buildings on Occidental College’s campus, The Huntington Library and Gardens, The Langham, and the Hollywood Bowl. It has elements of Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Renaissance architecture. The Neptune Fountain, added in 1930, is a replica, made of white Carrara marble, about 2/3 in size of the 16^th century fountain in Bologna, Italy. The fountain is ornate and contains sea monsters, spitting dolphins, and a naked Neptune.
